About
Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. The sheepdog demonstration times are available at https://caherconnell.com/sheepdog/demo-calendar/

    Fascinating
Sheepdog demonstration was fun and interesting. Although they are working dogs, they are still cute too. I especially enjoyed learning about the stone forts and history of the Burren. There was a lot of detailed information provided in the tour of the fort.

    Worth the Drive
We really enjoyed the sheepdog demo-made even better by the quick wit and obvious bond with the dogs that John has. We were in awe of the entire experience! Our guide of the Caherconnell Fort was exceptionally knowledgeable about the fort, the land and the people. He allowed for as many questions and as much interaction as we could come up with, and all done with a great attitude and fun spirit. Thank you, for an amazing experience that will be a fabulous memory always!!! This is a 10/10 for us and we will suggest this wonderful place to all we come in contact with!

    Fascinating even in the rain:-)
The sheepdog demonstration is watching "One man and his dog" live. Great to see the character of each dog and how they work. The round fort was fascinating and just a shame all the archaeological artefacts had been removed to "museums" and that we only had photos to look at. We'll worth the visit despite the inclement weather. Thanks to Tom our waterproof guide!

    Glad we made the stop
What a delightful addition to our trip through Ireland. It’s always amazing to watch these dogs, work, and the facilities here or great for watching everything happen. The staff was very hospitable. We were able to ask questions and put the pups afterward. It’s great to see the dogs in action. The roads to get there are a bit challenging, as they are narrow and curvy, and it gets very interesting when you need to pass one of the tour buses. But that’s all part of the charm of getting there.

A wonderful sheepdog demonstration that was a highlight of our trip
We enjoyed watching the sheepdog demonstration and learning how the dogs are trained. We observed the dog herding the sheep through a gate and around multiple fences in response to the herdsman whistle. Later four dogs worked together again responding to a unique whistle for each dog. While voice commands work well, a whistle can be heard at greater distance. We were shown different types of sheep and learned their optimal uses. Appreciate learning about why Irish sheep have colors sometimes. The demonstration is outside but spectators can stand under a canvas overhead to protect them from rain. The herdsman uses a microphone so everyone can hear. After the demo he answered questions and had the dogs sit for pictures. We really enjoyed this as a highlight of our visit to Ireland, especially as this family farm has been in operation for over 300 years. Farming is challenging and I felt this was a unique way to share a bit of local culture and history. On the day we visited we chose to not visit the stone fort due to rain. Maybe next time.

    Best Stop of Our Trip!!!!
Tom told us about the stone fort and was extremely interesting. He interacted with the group in a very pleasant and humorous way. He was great! Aaron was also outstanding, educating the group on the skills needed to train the border collies to herd the sheep and cows. The demo was amazing! The dogs are awesome 🤩 And the gift store was the best for quality gifts and souvenirs. Don’t miss this; it’s so worth it… a definite highlight of our trip!

Great experience with Sheepdogs at Caherconnell fort
Very nice experience seeing the sheepdogs at work. Good explanation on their training and what they are expected to do. The fort tour is also enjoyable and educative. Highly recommend it. We did the 11 am demonstration and fort tour and then went to Doolin and the Cliff of Moher before heading to Lahinch for an overnight stay at Vaughan lodge. It was a wonderful day. .

A unique experience that is a must on a trip to Co. Clare.
We visited Caherconnell Fort as part of our trip to Galway. We attended the afternoon sheepdog demonstration and honestly could not recommend it highly enough. We were introduced to all four dogs and got to see them all in action, rounding up and then separating the sheep. We then got an ‘up close’ experience of the sheep, which was so informative. Our guide for the duration was superb and we couldn’t believe he was only 17! My 12 year old nephew said it was one of the best things he has ever done - he even got the opportunity to direct one of the dogs, something he will remember for a long time. Great to see a farm diversifying in such a unique way. The viewing areas even come with a covering, ensuring the weather doesn’t impact on your visit. We had coffee from the coffee shop before leaving and the staff there were so lovely too (especially the lady with the Armagh connections, who spotted my nephew’s jersey!), and the gift shop has something for everyone - for us it was a sheep wearing a peaked cap!

Highly recommend this FUN, informative experience!
We were thrilled to see this was close to our B&B and so excited to see the dogs, having two of our own (very unskilled) dogs waiting for us at home. This completely lived up to the hype in the reviews and exceeded our expectations. We took the stone fort tour beforehand and it was very comprehensive, but because it's not an extensive space, it didn't drag on and our tour guide, Tom, did an excellent job of keeping us on pace despite chatty group members (every group has at least one...). Great for adults and kids alike. Would visit again!

This was so much fun! John was wonderful and my wife and I spent about 45 minutes after the demonstration just talking. The dogs were great and so well trained. Anyone could tell that the dogs and the sheep are well taken care of and respected.

This was such a terrific experience. I can’t speak highly enough of this place. For starters, they have an archeologist on site to explain the nuances of the stone fort. Stephany is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this area. She also happened to be part of the excavation team a few years back and shared some sweet details from that experience. I’ve been to other Neolithic sites in Ireland, but to have an expert on hand to answer questions was awesome. Then, switching gears to the sheep do go demonstration. Greg was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun (and funny!). He has a lot of love for the dogs who were happy to be doing their job and activating their instincts. We got a lot of time with the dogs and Q&A after the show, including petting the dogs and even holding a lamb. Some children who were there enjoyed this part, but we adults were just as enthusiastic. The gift shop staff are also lovely. I enjoyed talking with them and learning more about our the area. Lastly, the scenery is stunning. This is truly a unique Irish experience. No lines, no massive crowds. I highly recommend visiting this place.

The sheepdog demonstration is interesting and fun. At the end, participants are welcomed to meet the dogs but not the sheep, be advised. The dogs are super sweet.

We did the combination ticket which included a tour of the Caherconnell Fort.
DO THIS!!! It was amazing.

Stephanie, an archeologist, led the tour of the Fort and she is both knowledgeable and personable. She shared the significant history of the site conversationally and anecdotally. She has a real gift. We LOVED this part.
There are on-going archeological digs at this site each year, we learned.
Artifacts from as far back as the Bronze age have been discovered here, and up to the "modern era" with evidence of people dwelling at this fort in the 1500s.

I highly recommend booking the Sheepdog and Fort combination ticket!

The Caherconnel Stone Fort and Sheepdog Demonstration was interesting and fun! Our tour guide Stephanie was amazing! She gave us a lot of information about the fort and the archeological finds and history of it. The sheepdog demonstration was really neat to watch! I thought my dog at home was smart until I watched these dogs in action. I would highly recommend visiting this place. The food in the Cafe is A+ also, especially the chocolate chip cookies. I wanted to take a dozen home with me!
