About
Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. The sheepdog demonstration times are available at https://caherconnell.com/sheepdog/demo-calendar/

Didn't get to see the dog demonstrations, but touring the fort itself was just amazing.
They had a video that explained the site and the history of it as well as archaeological information, and the pamphlet was equally informative.
Worth the visit.

Watched a sheep dog demonstration. Two actually, Different dogs, slightly different procedure, but truly amazing watching them control the sheep. And by whistle only. The dogs themselves were eager, and loved to be petted. Especially, Rose, who had to be belly-rubbed by everyone. Our hosts also gave us a running commentary on the area and raising/tending sheep in general. Then entertained us with some music and fun activities. Thoroughly enjoyable time.

Really enjoyed our visit to caherconnell. Our 3yr really enjoyed the sheep dog trials. The facility is really clean and tidy. Clear it's family run and they take great pride in it. The guy doing the sheep dog trials is a character.

We had such a fantastic time here today. The Sheepdog Demonstration stole the show - it was so impressive with great dogs and a great trainer. It was informative about the dogs, training and sheep and also funny! There was clearly a lovely relationship between all the dogs and the trainer. We also went to view the Fort afterwards and had a great tour - it was a journey through time and very interesting and absolutely beautiful views. We also ate here and enjoyed deliciously fresh food. I would highly recommend! Thank :)

Visited CaherConnell about a week ago. The Ring Fort is excellent, especially after viewing the videos in the AV room. The Gift Shop is also lovely and we purchased a replica of the lovely CaherConnell ring... But the biggest shout out goes to the staff who were so helpful in showing us the best places to go in the Burren. A lovely spot. Michele & Ger

We enjoyed the fort but the sheepdog trial by far stole the show today! Fantastic opportunity to watch four well trained, clever dogs in action & learn about the training process. We all loved having the chance to work the dogs ourselves. Greg was so informative & friendly. Highly recommend this, a great holiday memory for us, our teenager & three younger children.

Very nice and unusual experience. The fort might be a bit boring for the kids but the sheepdog demonstration is well worth it. Kids loved it. Greg was really friendly and answered all our questions. The demonstration was really nice. Not something you see everyday We got to spend time with the dogs at the end. The shop is also really nice. Nice for families with children.

It's great that our visitors enjoy watching the sheepdog demonstrations, there is a huge amount of time and effort involved in training the dogs and it's nice that people appreciate it. Children love trying out the voice commands with the dogs it's always good fun. We have added a treasure hunt to the fort visit for younger children, so that should make it more interesting for them! Thank you for visiting and taking the time to leave such a nice review.

The fort itself is well worth a visit and an amazing piece of history ...... but the highlight by far is the dog demonstration and hearing about how the dogs are trained. A real once off experience !! The coffed shop and gift shop are both also great

Amazing experience! An absolute must see! We happened to be driving by, chanced it without any prebooking. I walked in with two moody girls and left with two hyped happy kiddos. Talked about it all the way home. First trip when they actually listened to every word that the guide said. Pat and Greg talked in great details about the sheep and dogs. Answered every question we threw at them.
#1 on the bucketlist for your staycation.

Hi Anna O, thanks for your review The fort really is in incredible condition considering it is well over 1000 years old. The continuing archaeological work which has been going on for over 10 years now has seen us uncover many secrets of the past and we are delighted to be able to share these with our visitors. We work hard every day to create a great visitor experience at Caherconnell and we are delighted you enjoyed your visit.
