The abbey church is beautiful and clearly historically important. I loved the way that, when restoration removed the render from the façade, they've exposed lumps of ancient carving (sarcophagi) used in the building. Unfortunately although the church is free, access to the abbey is only by guided tour. I don't expect everyone to speak English but it would have helped... More

A nice hot sunny September day spent here. Plenty of car park space. We wandered round the abbey and a book fair that was on. There's a decent café for elevensies and a restaurant where we had a good lunch - my sister loved her huge trout. All-in-all a nice relaxed day in the sun.

Visited with children age 7 and 9. Pretty setting and church but to be honest with younger children i'd skip the tour. All in Italian with no effort to welcome others despite my attempts to introduce us.you cannot go around alone. Church is free and beautiful. There is an English guide book in the narrow gift shop but it is... More

In the Sabine Hills approximately one hour from Rome is this beautiful Abbey of St. Mary in Farfa. The Catholic church is beautiful with mosaic tiled floors and pulpit. I was told later no photos in the church. It also closes at 1 p.m. This is a wonderful place to visit if you like a relaxing beautiful drive out of... More

Farfa is a delightful, if a bit touristic, place to visit when you need a break from the crowds of Rome. It's set in green hills and surrounded by woods. The small 'borgo' is dominated by the abbey, which you can take a guided tour around. It has an interesting history. No cars are allowed in the borgo, so it's... More

We enjoyed the entire complex at the Abby. Of special interest was being able to attend Sunday Mass there. It was wonderful. After mass we walked through the entire complex and checked out their store full of wonderful honeys.

Our dear friend in Rome took us for an afternoon trip outside Rome to see the Abbey of Farfa. It was a lovely drive in the beautiful countryside. The Abbey is a very fascinating place, full of peacefulness and simplicity, as simple as the Benedectine monks who live in its profound spiritual atmosphere. Their ordinary life is devoted to God... In the Sabine hills to the north east of Rome there is wonderful quaint town of Farfa which is basically an old monsatery (but still in use) and a few streets around it. Beautiful area, nice atmosphere - a great place to spend an afternoon away from the crowds and heat of Rome. You need a car to get there... More

Farfa is a beautiful monastic village tucked into the Sabine Hills. It is about a 15 minute drive from the local train station, called Fara Sabina-Montelibretti. The history of this village dates back to the 5th century and still has original medieval streets visible. The church is spectacular and filled with amazing frescos, the monastery itself is open for tours... More

The Abbey ranks with Cluny etc as amongst the most important historically in Europe. Charlemagne slept here! Secondly, it is very beautiful. The downside is that all tours are in Italian and the guides I have approached do not speak English. But one can buy an admission ticket anyway for a guided tour , and after entering, one can leave... More
