Beautiful traditional wooden houses, worth a stop
Sep 2019
We parked next to the church which in itself is another beautiful ecclesiastical building. We then wandered down the road where you are able to see many examples of these traditional wooden houses. I just love the way they are constructed and the pride they take in cleaning them externally every year. We even managed to see a brand new one which was near completion. Such a great tradition which hopefully will continue to be passed down the generations.

Short stop on the way back from Zakopane
Mar 2019 • Couples
the traditional wooden houses are built with out any nails and straw or moss is pressed between the timbers. We were shown one house that was built from one huge tree. Each year they are washed with a special soap to keep them waterproof.

Some looked a little unloved and dilapidated but an interesting stop.

THE LIVING OPEN AIR MUSEUM
Apr 2017 • Business
I always wondered how the wood cottages could survive for few centuries.
The secret is in terpentine soap. Three times a year local women wash the wooden walls of cottages with soap! Imagine the sever Polish winter, when temperature dropped minus 25 degree Celsius...
Recommended Visit by local careered Mr.Ziemba. You may get him at work. Watching is free! Enjoy living museum Cho-cho-łów

Do be fair it was pouring down and we all wanted the toilets

We visited here on our way to Zakopane. The tour guide was grumpy, it was raining and misty and half the coach wantedtovisit the loos. There were two and a severe male operator who wanted 2 Zloty per person. Eventually we walked down past lots of quaint wooden houses with flowers in the yards. We stopped at a house which was also the wood carvers shop and studio. The carvings were amazing, not something I say lightly. They were intricate, some large some minute but all beautifully done. The small house was also fascinating.

The church was stone, about the only thing there, but it was almost impossible to see for the low loud/mist.

A very interesting place.

I stopped by this place to have a look and stayed for a couple of hours. It was really nice to see this type of history of Southern Poland. Everything was well preserved and looked awesome.

We really enjoyed the day and finished off at the local restaurant where there was a Local Wedding going on. Now that was interesting with all their customs.

I have to return again.

Lively open-air museum, Chocholow
Sep 2015
Very interesting town located about 19 km from Zakopane. The majority of the building is more than 200-year-old wooden traditional highlander cottages. The village was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I can not imagine to be in Podhale and not visit this place. In addition to the building is worth visiting here Chochołów Uprising Museum and visit the workshop of sculptor Jan Ziędra.

Well worth a stop

I stopped at this village on my way from Krakow to Slovakia to tour Oravsky and Spis castles. It is only a few miles from the border with Slovakia, a perfect place for a stop and a brief walk to stretch the legs. The town has one main street with rows of single-story wooden houses on both sides. They were built with few if any nails. Many of the inhabitants are carpenters and wood-carvers, and it shows in the unique designs and patterns. Their gardens are also magnificent. It doesn't take long to tour the main street, and there are several shops where you can purchase homemade wooden crafts at very reasonable prices.
