Not worthy

The castle itself looks nice from the outside & has a nice view to the valley. I consider the 5eur entrance too much since inside it's empty. It was really sad to see birds in captivity and even more sad to see management's argument to a comment of another traveller somewhere in the reviews saying that all recent techniques are used & the purpose is to show how people were living back then. So, If slavery existed back then, would this justify presenting it live for educational purpose???

I am also not aware as a traveller about that era and many others are the same I guess. It's your responsibility to enlighten us.

Anyway, big disappointment.

Good day, admission to the castle is 5 € on weekends when the program is in progress. During the week we have 4 € entrance fee. I think that we discussed the issue of falconry in a previous review, so I will not go back to that. Slavery in this connection is a bit of a strong word and it is certainly not in our interest to present something. Then you could call the slaver a man who leads his dog on a leash and does not allow him to move freely. Similarly, all hop animals and the like. It may be a pity that both falconry performances as well as animal descriptions and individual lectures are in Slovak. However, this would probably not change your mind. There are various programs in the castle during the weekend. At the same time exhibitions (Ladislav Medňanský - paintings for example) and two small exhibitions of archeology. The truth is that most of these exhibits and descriptions are only in the Slovak language and so the foreign-language visitor will learn in English only the history of the castle and the description of individual objects. We will therefore have to translate all our activities into English at least. Not just the basic offer.

Shocked by animals' prison!!!
Aug 2019 • Couples
We stopped there spontaneously on our way back to Poland. No much expectations, however, castle looked very impressive from the outside. Price - 5 euros, possibility of paying by card. At the entry we got 2 materials in English. Although there were many people, we had a small walk inside. However, the most horrifying thing we discovered at the end while exploring the main yard. There was 'exhibition' of owls and eagles which were ropped to sticks located in the ground. They had water next to them but they were in the full sun with 31 degrees! I got shocked the moment I saw that eagle wanted to fly and he fell down on the ground because the rope had maybe 30 cm. One owl was making a lot of noice. This was pure suffering of these animals. There were also pigs, goats and chickens but at least they were in the shadow. We left immediately with horrible feeling that we contributed to animal's suffering by buying tickets. I just hope that it was one off as it was an organized scout day. However, I have just noticed a comment from one year ago when the same situation took place. It is XXI century and these people should be punished !!!!

It was not an „exhibition“, it was a falconer´s post. These posts were common at castles from early middle-age to the end of feudal era. The birds of prey were trained for hunting. Beckov castle wants to show to visitors ways of medieval life and because of that we have here falconers. And we are not the only – falconers are common at majority of castles at Slovakia, and also in another countries. About the sticks – these sittings are used, because it is more humane for birds than putting them to a cage, where birds would damage their feathers and won´t be able to fly. Raptors are bound to them and their legs are used, because they are sturdiest bodypart of the body and birds are trained to wear this straps, called jesses, from young age. And birds are flying numerous times every day, as a part of performance, or just for flying itself. Birds spend only about 2 hours of the day at direct sunlight – moving shaddow lefts them at about 12:30 and second arrives about 14:30. For birds of prey, it is not a problem. In wilderness, they have nests at top of rocks, cliffs and trees, where is no shaddow at all. Wild birds are not trying to spend time at a shaddow even in very hot days – they are sunbathing, because that grants them D-vitamine, crucial for their survival. And at falconer´s post, falconers gently pours water over them at very hot days to cool them down. The noisy owl was the barn owl (Tyto alba). If this spieces if raised by humans, all-day shrieking is natural for them. Ti is called imprinting – owls considers falconers, that raised them, as parents and is trying to grab their attention. Some of them shieks even while sleeping. About other animals, they are representing the farmyard, that was part of any castle in middle-ages. Animals are not closed in pen whole day, only through opening hours of castle – for their own safety. They can roam freely and feed of grass at castle before opening and after closing. Falconry is the art with 4500 year tradition. In 2010 was inscribed on a Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, with all of its methods and techniques of training and taking care of birds of prey. These methods are internationaly aproved and they are regurarly controled and in the case of violation of regulations, there are severe punishments. It is sad, that the art of falconry, which is unsepparable part of cultural history of humanity, is judged by some people, because they don´t know anything about it. In XXI. century, when majority of informations is achievable through a single click.

Super imposing castle overlooking the valley
Apr 2019 • Couples
You can drive up to the bottom of the entrance to the castle but it is still a steep walk up to the castle. Very interesting inside with lots of photos of the renovations they have done over the years. Amazing to see all the little nooks and crannies within the walls with exhibitions at various points.

Beckov; a stop on a way to wherever that is worth to be done
Apr 2018 • Family
During our trip through Slovakia in summer 2017 we seen the castle form the highway. It was simple to find it after left the highway on the first exit. The parking is in the village under the castle and there is some poor 10 minutes of walking to the castle.

The whole caste is to be self visited, info are in English, some nice panoramic view from the castle to the surroundings and inside interesting tools, arms, equipment exposed around. there is a small gift shop a clean toilet. Traveled with kids (2, 5, 8).

Absolutely disgusting the way the animals are 'looked after'
Aug 2018 • Couples
We visited this castle yesterday. Whilst it was quite interesting, the conditions they keep the birds of prey and other creatures was disgusting. The birds are in hot sun without shelter and nothing to drink. It was 33 degrees and it was obvious they were struggling. Chickens and ducks in a pen, no shelter, no food, water full of mess. Piglets in the same condition. Birds in a hut with no foliage, a few perches, dirty water. And worst of all near the well, a ferret and a polecat in 2 separate huts with absolute nothing except a pool of dirty water. No food, nothing to do, no bedding - a solitary confinement prison. You ought to be ashamed of yourself as it does not take much to make their environment more comfortable. The slovakian tourist board or the animal welfare department should close this place down. Disgraceful

An excellent detour when driving from Bratislava to Kosice...
Jul 2018 • Couples
Very easy to find, just 1 hour north-east of Bratislava and 5 minutes off the D1 motorway. Make sure you bear right at the castle into the car park otherwise you'll head straight up the cobbled path towards the entrance then struggle to reverse down once you realise your error.
The first thing you notice is how high and impressive the walls are. Admission fee at a very nice 3.50 eur pp, that also comes with a English booklet guide so no reason to hire a guide as the necessary info is in your hand. 1-1/2 hour is enough time to get round the castle admiring the different sections and tales. Chapel, palaces, courtyards, defence areas are just some of the ruins that still make the mind wander back to the 16th century. Souvenirs, cafe and an outdoor staged shows are also on offer. Shame on exit they have owls and other birds chained for their lives to act as another part of the attraction that does not need to be apparent. Overall great preservation and a much better experience than Cachtice Castle...

Lots to see and explore
Jun 2018 • Family
An amazing old castle ruin full of corridors, staircases and rooms to explore! They have set up audiovisual demonstrations of dragons in some of the dungeons, which has a very cool and memorable effect! There are also cafes, souvenir stores and toilets in the castle inner yard.

We had a bit of a hassle when we arrived as the people in the ticket sales were busy preparing for a special event at the castle, and we, as confused tourists who didn't understand Slovak language, mistook their inattentiveness as "oh, the castle has a free entry!" and just boldly walked in. The staff probably noticed this but were too nice and kind to run after us... We noticed our mistake only later and paid the tickets when leaving the castle......(so, for a bit dumb people like ourselves: it is NOT free!)
