We unfortunately could not do a tour as they were fully booked but enjoyed the interactive walk through section they had.

The day tour was worthwhile, although the tour guide's knowledge was lacking once we scratched beneath the surface. The evening tour was extremely poor, with an unnecessary DVD played at start off followed by a perfunctory tour of a few objects in the night sky. Definitely less enthusiasm showed than Jurg, who we visited the evening before.

We took a day tour as well as a night tour. Both were interesting in their own way. The day tour involves a tour of SALT. The night tour involves looking through telescopes (NOT SALT as that is used by scientists at night) at the night sky. Take a jacket - it is freezing no matter how warm the day... More

In the Sutherland area, the SALT and SAAC visitor centre is a must visit. Prebook to ensure availability of a tour. The tour was informative with enough time for taking photographs, and the guide entertaining. Souvenir photographs may be taken at the visitors centre, and proved great fun.

We booked ahead of time for both the afternoon and evening tours. These turned out to be completely different experiences. The afternoon tour starts with a guided tour of the museum giving a general understanding of telescopes and astronomy. After which you drive up to the top where SALT and all the other telescopes (owned and managed by many nations)... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at SALT. more due to our own knowledge and excitement. I do feel the tour was "rushed" our guide seemed to be just going through the motions spewing out facts with no context. the video presentation was also outdated and barely relevant. The facility is super impressive, highly recommended.

What an interesting visit. If you are interested in the stars, the cosmos, the universe, well do yourself a favour and visit SALT. Very impressive.

We went to Sutherland like most visitors to see the stars and visit the SALT telescope. However, we were a little disappointed by the visitors centre in that most of the interative displays were not in working order and the lighting was terrible and thus made reading the interesting facts very difficult. The visit to the actual telescope however was... More

Really interesting and a must for anyone who loves astronomy. The tour is worth it and very informative as the guide knows his stuff.

My husband and I booked for an evening tour and were so excited when the clouds ckeared. However the wind was too strong and the humidity too hight to observe through the telescope.. such a pity but we completely understand. We watched the interesting video and walked through the education centre. Nonetheless the stars are just incredible in Sutherland! Still... More
