Came here for the 8pm night viewing on Monday night, which was excellent because of the enthusiasm and decriptions of the star scape on magnificent display at the SALT. You... read more

The trouble with visiting SALT is that you can't so much as even peek momentarily through any one of the large telescopes at night, because they are all booked out by bona fide astronomers who pay up to US$2000 an hour for the privilege. You get a day tour (shurely shome mishtake) around the facilities with a guide who certainly... More

Came here for the 8pm night viewing on Monday night, which was excellent because of the enthusiasm and decriptions of the star scape on magnificent display at the SALT. You view via 2 small telescopes set up inside what is basically an open air barn (so protected from the wind, but with a view to the sky for stargazing) that... More

This was a second visit to his facility. The previous time was much better organised , with knowledgeable staff leading the tour. This time the tour guide, rushed through everything and was not really interested in what she was doing. The display at the offices is poor, with little explanation and poor layout. Altogether disappointing.

There are three tours daily, but not all of them occur every day. We learned that it is important to book well in advance as most days the tours are fully booked. The morning or afternoon tour are very similar, but it is most worthwhile doing one of these and then combining it with the evening tour. This is what... More

We visit the Telescope on a Saturday. our guide had a good knowledge of the Telescope and we learned a lot. Also visit the museum and the visit is worth the money.

Very informative and well worth a visit. Willem was our guide and he is a real gem. He knows everything about this facility and explained all in terms which everyone understood. A must see while in this area. If you want to go stargazing at SALT make sure you book. This option is only available on certain nights of the... More

We booked a night tour instead of the day tour, expecting to have a tour of the observatory and then star gazing. Turns out the observatory tour is only during the day, so we just looked at the night skies as a group with 2 telescopes and brief explanations before viewing each sighting. Really disappointing as the main aim of... More

We chose to go to a day time tour of the telescope, to experience the workings. It was really interesting, and well presented. The short drive out is pleasant - we happened to be in flower time, September, and it was actually exquisite.

The night tour with star-gazing was amazing. The tour guide was excellent and very informative. We saw stars, clusters, galaxies, planets, satellites... It was really interesting, if a little cold on the night. The day tour was truly awful - i wouldn't recommend it at all. The guide knew I only spoke English, yet she constantly spoke in Afrikaans which... More

This visit has opened a whole new world . The astrologer that accompanied us on the tour was Brilliant. She was passionate about astrology and answered question after question. She spoke about their research and the new planet that has been discovered. It was just amazing and highly recommended.
