Nice, relaxing hikes near a beautiful, up-and-coming lake on the edge of the Dolomites
Aug 2021
Lago di Barcis is a small-to-medium sized lake with a small lake town on the eastern edge. The water is customary turquois color seen in the Dolomites. There are several picnic areas super ideal for a family or couple or even your sad and lonely self to have lunch after hiking around the lake. There is the common "circle the lake" hike that is fine for all ages or number of legs, then there are a few other hikes that head into the hills that are a little more challenging, but not much. The challenging hikes are primarily down stream from the dam with opportunities to overlook the gorge.

As far as I can tell, there is no swimming anywhere in the lake. There is definitely no swimming near the town as there are signs (I'll upload the evidence). There were boats on the water lashed to a small dock, but they were clearly personal vessels and there does not appear to be any rental opportunities for boats or paddle boards etc. Honestly, its a big miss on their part if this is truly the case.

Beautiful lake Barcis is back!!
Jul 2021
So my last review of Barcis was in November 2019 before Covid hit and the World went mad!

Obviously international travel since then has been difficult, but during the last 2 years, much has happened in Barcis. Firstly the lake was partially drained to allow an impressive new road bridge to be constructed near the dam, (which it is hoped will enable many vehicles to bypass the centre of Barcis in the future) and whilst the water levels were low, much stone and debris was removed from the rivers feeding the lake improving their appearance and efficiency.

During this period of disruption, those lucky enough to be able to visit, experienced "Barcis Riviera", (a pebbly beach which is now once more under many meters of water), as well as the chance to view some of the old stone works which are normally submerged and therefore not visible. Some of these works appeared extremely ancient, however their origin is a mystery to me as sadly I've not been able to find any information about them anywhere....

In any event, this post is intended to confirm that the lake is now back to its beautiful self - full to the brim and available once more to anyone wishing to use it, admire it, or simply to be stunned by it!

Well done to those responsible for completing all the works so quickly and effectively. I look forward to seeing what impact the new bridge has on traffic flows through the village.

It is also perhaps worth adding that local businesses have also not been idle over the last couple of years and in this regard a special mention must go to "La Serenissima" on Via Dante which now has an amazing new terrace with spectacular views over the lake.

Look out Como, Lugano & Maggiore, Barcis is coming!!!

The Crystal Lake of Barcis in Northern Italy ( Lago di Barcis 33083)
Oct 2019
forDget the Italian Riviera, Firstly too Crowed, Secondly can you say "EXPENSIVE" Forget all that mess and come to this quaint little village in the center of the Dolomites. Beside getting in touch with Mother Nature - Breath taking - there are some very special restaurants around the immediate area. Polenta - a Major Speciality is available at all for those of you that had "NONNAs" and remember that wooden Polenta Paddle, this is a must.
I have read that someone wanted to know if you can go swimming here of course you can, as well as kayaking, paddle boating and sailing as long as you use sail or electric motor. Can you imagine bathing in Crystal Clear Pure Mountain Water - talking about a Healing or SPA Treatment. Now mind you, I am from there - American Italian, and am planning on retiring there due to all the ammenities for example one of the best Cancer Centers of Europe is located in Aviano, Venice is 1 hour ride and the Airport of Trevisio is just over 1 hour away. Coming from Upstate New York - this is a treasure. So take a look, come on over and be Surprise by this Treasure of the Dolomites. Enjoy.

I genuinely think that this is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places in the World
Oct 2019
Beautiful and as yet unspoilt Lago di Barcis sits at the gateway to the dolomites. Emerging from the series of tunnels which lead to the area one feels ones spirits lift as you take in the amazing colours and views of the lake with its mountain range backdrop. Although the village is small it contains a variety of cafes/bars and restaurants some of which have seasonal opening times but even out of season there remain a range of interesting places to get a drink or have a meal. As with most places in Friuli the food is delicious generous and very reasonable in price - similarly the wine. Clearly one of the main attractions of the area is the access it provides to the countryside and as Barcis sits in a National Park it is possible to take numerous trails from the village into the mountains if this is your thing - however it is also a good place to just enjoy the view and relax if you don't feel like doing anything strenuous! During the Summer season and into Autumn there are various free activities such as exhibitions and shows in the village so it is worth checking what (if anything) is on during the period you intend to visit.

Lake Barcis area visit
May 2019 • Family
Have visited the Lake Barcis area 4 or 5 times. Most attractions are outdoors. It has a small town, nice restaurants, many nice hiking trails, a-train that tours you through the town and surrounding areas. There is a beautiful canyon tour. The lake and views are gorgeous. All around its a nice day or weekend getaway. There is a nice park and playground for the kiddos. Prices are very reasonable. Great photo opportunities abound.

The most beautiful green water, it blows your mind. I’m not sure if we are allowed to swim, but totally worth for the view, there’s a trail around the lake. This place is just really beautiful and peaceful.

Visit to Lake Barcis
Jul 2018 • Couples
Great Lake to visit in the mountains. The water is freezing but so worth the view. There are picnic benches or open grass areas to set up, RVs spots and pay to pay for very cheap.

Hiking with impressive views around a beautiful lake!
Jun 2018 • Solo
I was just in town for a few days and a friend recommended to go check out Lago di Barcis...I saw there were some hiking trails so I took my dogs and went to check it out. The lake itself is very pretty and the town of Barcis is a quaint small Italian village. It was really quiet when we walked through it.
My recommendation is really to go hiking there. There are some options for different levels of difficulty, but even the longer loop we did was not very strenuous. Some hill climbing, but the views make it worth it.
If you're driving up from the southeast side, once you pass the damn and more tunnels there is a visitor's center (closed when we were there, but had a decent map at least) and restaurant. They are on your left, at the beginning of the lake. Start there, and walk down the road along the lake just a short bit, then head up on the purple (on the trail map - see attached photo) trail. This is the steepest part, but it heads up to a great overlook of the lake, including a small see-through walkway out over the gorge. From there follow the ridge line up to another impressive lookout (#5 on trail map). It gets a little steep on the way down, so you could turn back at that point. We hiked the length of the ridge on the purple trail, then took the yellow trail which was a paved road back. In all it took just about 2 hours at a moderate pace and was almost 3 1/2 miles. Overall a great afternoon with some rewarding views in those 2 spots.
