Brilliant museum
Dec 2019 • Solo
This museum is so well planned, starting with a 2 minute screen display of the increases in speed of trains over 2 centuries. The layout of exhibits is ordered and easy to understand. Descriptions in most cases are in English, as well, of course, in Portuguese. There is lots to see and touch. The exhibition then goes outside to a fantastic collection of steam locomotives grouped around an original and still working turntable. There are about 10 locos, massive units from the mid C19 to the mid C20. There's the chance to view the Royal Train, and walk inside the Presidential Carriage. I spent 3 hours there, smiling all the time. All the guides are friendly and speak English, and a special thank you to Tomas, who is almost as good as the world's best tour guide, James A, at Chelsea Football Club.
A great museum to visit.

Train Lovers Rejoice!
Sep 2019
We love trains and so the recent Steampunk Festival (Festival Vapor) at the Museu Nacional Ferroviario was a perfect opportunity to visit the site. We found the museum staff friendly, despite the crowd, and the exhibits clearly labeled both in Portuguese and English.

There was a variety of rolling stock, including the gorgeous royal train, and plenty of informative signs to help you understand the growth of Portugal’s train network over the decades. Well worth the visit for both adults and kids.

Excellent railway museum
Jul 2019 • Family
I have visited several excellent national railway museums across Europe, including those of Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK (at York). Portugal’s national railway museum is as good as any of these: the staff are superb, the layout is impressive and informative. My wife and young daughter also really enjoyed it (and my wife is normally not at all interested in trains). Some very unusual exhibits, including the old Royal Train (Portugal became a Republic in 1910) and the pre-1970 Presidents Train. Easy to reach by train from Lisbon or Porto, with a direct footbridge from Entroncamento station to the museum.

Amor para comboio, e identico!

You can feel and see the history of railway in Portugal in this museum. The luxury car for president is worth seeing! If possible, guided tour is recommendable.

Excellent museum with great exhibits and guided
May 2019 • Friends
Visited as a birthday treat with 2 friends on a road trip south. The museum is beautifully designed and the exhibits well-displayed with good information in Portuguese and English.
The staff were excellent - making our visit especially memorable.
The museum is really excellent with a wonderful range of vehicles, artefacts and historic locomotives.
It’s also great that the museum is located at a busy railway hub so you can actually cross over working rail lines.
I rate this museum on a par with the UK National Rail Museum - although Entroncamento was especially memorable because of the wonderfully helpful staff.
A great day out!

A unique collection of old European engines and stock
Dec 2018 • Friends
The best parts of the collection are the Cockerills, Beyer Peacocks, Hartmann/Chemnitz and Henschels, including a metre gauge Mallet. The royal train is beautifully restored, headed by a gleaming 2-2-2 8 footer by Beyer Peacock, 1862 on the plate. There is also a rare collection of early British electrics. Well worth the excursion.

Parabéns! What a wonderful museum. Now.....we are not into trains and we found this museum by accident. However, I am so glad that we did. After many a holiday in Portugal, we were running out of ideas of places to visit. So I looked up on TripAdvisor for things to do around Santarém. Then this museum appeared. Why not? Indeed, Why not. It is modern, informative, clean and had the most beautiful locomotives and carriages. From the bygone eras of steam trains to the later deisel trains. Not just the trains themselves were on show, but many nostalgic pieces of furniture that gives an insight into how life used to be.
The sheds where some of the trains are kept looked like a scene straight from an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine.
This museum is a well kept secret, but it shouldn't be. It is wonderful, just as much as the staff who work there too. So friendly and helpful. Thank you for a great afternoon.

Worth every cent!
Feb 2018 • Couples
My husband and i visited this wonderful museum in late February.
It is a large museum , so wear comfortable shoes and in the busier and much hotter summer days , take some water.
It is very well laid out with lots of interesting exhibits even if you are not particularly fixated on engines. The information is provided in English as well as Portuguese, which is most helpful. There were also a number of staff on hand to answer questions and show you round.
A large number of engines and carriages are there, spanning the earliest development of railways in Portugal to the modern day.

When we were there, it was quiet ,which gave us an opportunity to take a good look at everything , which was great. Allow yourselves plenty of time, at least a half day, to make the most of it. It was very safe and clean and deserves better exposure.

It cost us , i think 5 euros per adult and it was worth every cent. Definitely an attraction to put on your list.

Has much potential
Mar 2018 • Couples
We have spent half a day and 52€ for two to get to the museum from Lisbon during our city trip (you can get combo tickets at the Lisbon train stations). As a train enthusiast, I must say that there are many train themed museums in Europe that I would recommend before this one, spontaneously thinking of the great ones in Mulhouse F, Nuremberg D, or Lucerne CH. This one here has great potential due to size of the terrain (unfortunately poorly utilized) and some of the displayed trains with the Portuguese Royal Train being the greatest gem. But the very big drawback is the poor access to the trains. Example: What good is it to see the presumably most noble first class waggon in PT by Schindler if there aren't even ladders or elevated walkways around the exhibited items, let alone any inside lighting! Essentially it feels like sneaking around a railway yard, not seeing anything that is higher than 2 meters. 3 stars because if you are in the area anyway and a train enthusiast, you mist go. But don't go out of your way for this one.
