See the inspiration for the fairy-tale castle in Sleeping Beauty: Charles Perrault, the author of the popular tale, was so impressed he decided on this castle as the setting of his story.

We drove past Usse a few years ago but didn't have the time to stop. We made it a point this year. The sleeping beauty tie-in was cute but the history, architecture and well manicured gardens are the real reason to see this chateau. I...More

We actually quite liked this cute wee castle. We saw it before going to its bigger cousins which helps, but in any case it's lovely and I didn't mind the entrance fee knowing that it's helping the owners to maintain the place. I would hate to...More

Of all the chateaus we visited, this was the worse, and the most expensive, the book had a glowing write up. I suggest you give it a miss, not very interesting @14 euros pp not worth the journey

The entrance fee is the most expensive out of all the château's. They had manikins everywhere as they were showing some sort of collection (I'm not sure what the connection was). It was almost like walking through Downton abbey because of all the manikins around...More

The chateau is a fairy tale itself, and is worthy of its title of being the inspiration for the story of Sleeping Beauty. Not modernised, or 'Disney-like', there is so much to see and even more history to experience when your there.

This is an impressive privately owned castle that is doing its best to earn an income while keeping the castle in working order. The current owner, since the early 19th century is the Duc de Blacas and balancing the need for an income and keeping...More

Castle itself is very nice, alongside with mannequin reenactment of different time periods. But don't expect too much from the "Sleeping beauty" exposition. It's not bad, but nothing too great either

Nice storybook around the Sleeping Beauty. The kids liked it. The outside appearance of the castle is spectacular too.

Roberto C
Hello, It seems from the website the Chateau d'Usse will be closed during the month of December when we are planning to spend a week at the Loire Valley. Are there exterior areas such as gardens around the castle that we can visit and take pictures of the castle? Or will it be all closed say from a gate far from the castle and one cannot even come close? Thank you in advance, Roberto

I think you will find that both the chateau, gardens and the chapel will be closed tightly over the holiday period. However, all is not lost. The chateau itself is situated on a bluff facing across the surrounding lands... More

We also rented a car and we had a GPS which we found quite helpful ! Beside the châteaux close to Rigny-Usse we also visited 2 of the most beautiful villages of France : Candes Saint-Martin and Monsoreau .
