Visited on a sunny Saturday in March. The setting of the house is spectacular. Arrived in time for the guided tour that goes into the gardens and over the road. This was very interesting and we learnt a lot about the house and garden from the friendly volunteer. We also caught the talk in front of the house later on.... More

We visited on Easter Sunday and it was not as busy as we expected. The staff were tremendous - smiled a lot and very helpful and enthusiastic. The grounds are massive. Plenty of space for picnics - although it would be nice if everyone could follow the guidance given about where not to picnic! The House itself seems bigger as... More

It is my closest NT site and I'm a member so cycled here on a Sunday. I was able to go round the house and have someone in each room be keen to give me information about each room and the house in general. The garden tour was also very interesting. The resturant was very busy and the staff quite... More

I took my mother and sister here yesterday. We really enjoyed the visit. The house with all its furniture is in brilliant condition, the gardens are beautiful and the people inside each room were friendly, knowledgeable and interesting. They have a painting of the teenage girl who once lived there, which has been loaned to the house for 1 year.... More

The house is set in an intimate little valley which is landscaped with views from all sides. Rolling grassed areas with maintained trees frame pretty flowered areas too. The manor house is fascinating and is surrounded by a good sized moat, with lovely aubretia growing off some of the walls. The house has been added to many times, over hundreds... More

Went to this lovely moted building, which has an idyllic feel to it. Not a home used by great nobility, but dating back to the 1300s, it has great charm and warmth. We had two young children with us and they were given 'Eye Spy' sheets (on clip-boards with pencils) with 45 images to match to things they saw. It... More

Visited on a busy Saturday and took advantage of a most informative talk by one of the volunteers before visiting the house. Made that experience more enjoyable. All the house stewards were helpful and informative and all added to the visit. Lovely well maintained grounds to enjoy as well. We will certainly be visiting again.

A beautiful National Trust house, surrounded by a moat with pretty gardens. Exceptionally friendly and informative guides, nice cafe and gift shop. Off the beaten track, but well worth a visit.

Beautiful house and Gardens but totally let down by the extremely rude staff member I was unlucky enough to encounter on the entrance. Condescending, snooty and extremely unwelcoming of Scottish National Trust Members. So much for 'for ever - for everyone'. If your thinking of visiting be on your guard as the silence from the other staff members who overheard... More

Thank you for emailing us your comments and this review. Your perception of your reception is disappointing, and I'm sure you are not one of these people, but you may be aware, a National Trust of Scotland membership cost less than a standard National Trust membership, but with the same access to all the same places in England/Wales & NI.... A beautiful old house surrounded by lovely gardens and lawns. We had an afternoon to spare so as members of the national trust decided to visit here. The weather was glorious which showed the house at its best in the sunshine. About 2 hours would be enough to see most of the place but it all depends how long you... More
