'Karimbin-Odathil Palli’ – The Mosque in Sugarcane Plantation
May 2019 • Family
In the heart of Thalassery town, amidst the busy shopping area lies this 213-year-old mosque, by name ‘Odathil Palli’. In Dutch, Odam means 'garden' and since the mosque has been constructed in the sugar cane garden (Odam) of the Dutch administration (which subsequently changed hands when the Dutch lost their powers to the British), the mosque came to be called Odathil Palli. It is purely a place of worship for the Muslims. The significance of this religious place lies in
(1) its age and historic importance: It is believed to have been built in 1806 by a member of the Keyi family, by name Moosakka, who had been a loyal contractor for the East India Company. The Keyis have been among the prominent traders of their period and as Moosakaka has been very honest and trustworthy, the company reward him with this Dutch sugar plantation. Thus, Musakaka bought this land for a small price and constructed this mosque in the 'Karimbin-odam' (sugarcane plantation) in Thalassery, and
(2) its architecture: This Islamic shrine follows a mix of Hindu-Buddhist-Muslim style of architecture. The roof is covered with copper sheets and wooden walls and the pillars having intricate carvings.

Odathil Palli, is a 200+ year old mosque half a kilometre from the Thalassery Fort

It’s one of the ancient mosques at Thalassery.

The mosque dates back from the British East India Company era and erected by a leading spice merchant of the time
It is now on private land (still) owned by Moosa family
