it is closed in 2021 and more in 2022! Great historical WWI monument.
Jun 2021
It is closed in whole year in 2021 (or even more for year 2022 ). DO NOT travel there, you will find all gates and museums closed!!

It is a pity, because it is a really spectacular monument! Not just a piece of rock, it is a piece of the tragic history of Hungary, Austria and Italy. Thousands of soldiers died here during WWI. They sacrificed their life in vain, fell for just a few meters of land.
The Italian names are written in the stairs, everywhere you can see up to the sky... Rest in peace.

Very moving experience
Oct 2018
I spent time at this memorial while visiting my family and unfortunately it was closed for renovations. However, this didn’t cause an issue as there is the original memorial burial ground across the road. Following the removal of the remains of the soldiers this area was designed to reflect the contribution of each battalion and so you will find, as you walk around the site, small pillars with brass plates upon which poems are written. Reading them is very moving and some had me in tears. It just made you realise that each soldier was someone’s son, father, brother, uncle and that someone would have grieved for them. The larger memorial is the resting place of the bones of 100,000 soldiers and is made up of a series of steps. I’ll definitely go back to visit it. There is a small bar where you can buy a coffee or something light to eat.

Closed for renovations

Huge disappointment getting there and it being closed! Posting said until spring 2019. I didn't see anywhere in my research before arriving that it was closed. But very close to the motorway so we luckily didn't make a huge detour for it! From the glimpse we got it looks impressive. Lots of WWI things in the area!

The place where the remains of 100 000 Italian soldiers are laid to rest
Aug 2018 • Friends
The memorial is a grandiose place built from cream coloured stone in a hill side. The remains of Italian soldiers who died in VWI in the Isonzo front are behind rows of small plaques on the walls of the 22 large terraces. At the top there are huge ossuaries for the many unknown fallen. The place is deeply touching.
The terraces are under renovation right now, no entrance from the main road.
The chapel covered inside in black stone and a museum with photos and personal items of the soldiers, both at the top of the memorial are open and worth to visit.
Free parking close to the chapel up the hill.

This war memorial is a very interesting place. It is particularly appropriate to visit it to remind us about the consequences of war. The memorial gardens are impressive.

Moving and Overwhelming
Aug 2017 • Couples
Quite a moving monument to so many lost young lives. A bit like the Vietnam memorial in Washington, it is overwhelming as you get closer. Set up similar to a military parade, with the senior officers up front and the remains of 100,000 enlisted ranks falling in behind, the simple “Presente” for each soldier listed is quite heartbreaking. If only they could answer for themselves. Plenty of parking and no admission charge, but might be a bit too much for those with mobility issues to climb to the top. Free parking across the street, and no admission charge.

This war memorial is truly outstanding! A must see for any WW1 historian or war buff to witness. It is truly epic, touching and deeply moving. One can almost see the events and feel the emotions that were underway when Benito Mussolini dedicated the memorial in 1938. Across the street from the memorial is a 'garden of reflection" where one can see other memorials and such dedicated to the thousands of soldiers who died during the Great War. Free entrance to the park and parking is free too.
