About
Kilchoman Distillery is a family run, independently owned single malt whisky distillery on Islay. It was the first to be opened on the island in over 124 years and is currently the only distillery producing whisky entirely on the island from barley that is grown on Rockside Farm, malted, distilled, matured and bottled on site. It is the smallest distillery and offers regular tours throughout the day. A cafe serving light lunches, homemade cakes and fresh tea and coffee is also open during the hours of 10am - 4.45pm. Advanced bookings for tours are encouraged to avoid disappointment.

If you are on Islay and want to visit a distillery, this is it.

Unlike most distilleries, which have a factory-type feel, this is family business, based on a farm. While most distilleries buy barley ready-malted, Kilchoman has its own fields of barley and malts its own. (It does need to buy in some malted barley, but it grows as much as it can.)

There is a spacious tasting room with cafe and coffee shop. Kilchoman in inland, up some narrow roads, but well worth the journey.

This was my first distillery tour- not just on Islay but in general and Emma did a wonderful job. We visited Kilchoman through a tour group (Rabbie's) and our group (10 people total) had a great tour to understand the whisky production process and enjoyed a tasting both during the tour and after.

We arrived on the morning flight to Islay, checked in at our hotel - and then hired a taxi to take us over to Kilchoman for the 11:00 AM Limited Edition Tasting and Tour. I would strongly recommend that this experience/tour be your first distillery visit when you arrive to Islay. This distillery, family owned, is the only one on the island -that still locally prepares its whisky from "barley to bottle." So the tour provides you with a truly in-depth experience of each step of the whisky making process. Very cool to see the barley fields and then malting floor (where you get to sample your first dram), where the peat is locally hand cut -and the peating process ...right through all the distillation and bottling steps - in one single location. Our guide Emma - was exceptional - knowledgeable, great sense of humour and able to answer all our questions. With this strong foundation of knowledge after visiting Kilchoman - you will be able to knowledgeably visit the rest of the distilleries. The limited edition tasting in the beautiful visitors' centre afterwards was spectacular --and I really appreciated being able to get four "driver's drams" to take back. The tasting glass on a lanyard is a nice souvenir too! After this tour and tasting --it was then perfect timing to grab lunch --and the Kilchoman cafe was delicious! We didn't make reservations -and I think we were lucky to be able to get a table. If I were going again - I would absolutely reserve a table in advance!

Nice modern distillery in beautiful countryside.

Decent lunch followed by some really excellent whiskies in a fabulous light and airy lounge. Superb space, never felt rushed yet there's a shop nearby if you want to browse or paths if you want to wander. Or better still generous seating to enjoy a dram or two. Big shout for the distillery exclusive bottling - you can taste the sea!

The tour was brilliant and very reasonable, Emma the guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and interesting. All other tours have to skip over the malting process or show you a video as it takes place elsewhere. At Kilchoman you see this and the barley growing in the fields around the distillery.
For drivers or those who just fancy drinking the samples later, you can take away them away in small bottles, along with your tasting glass.
I would heartily recommend this.

Take your tasting elsewhere on Islay; much better options available. Tour guide seemed disinterested, and the pours were essentially two or three miniature splashes of the whisky. Nowhere near the quality of many of the other distilleries in the region.

Informative and entertaining but a little shorter than other distillery tours, but worth pointing out that it is much cheaper.
