I've traveled this route twice. Once in 2013 and again in 2015. I'll be headed back again this year in August and September. This is a beautiful drive through the Yukon and NWT tundra. It is as others have said, a tire eating road if...More

We drove the Dempster Highway from Dawson City to Inuvit, the land of the midnight sun. Before heading out, stop at the Northwest Territory Dempster Highway Visitor Centre in Dawson City to get a map, and get weather and road conditions. Most locals will discourage...More

Quite a feat putting this highway over mountains and on a permafrost base. Good hiking along the way. Several rest stops. Very, very dusty. If you are traveling with an open bed truck suggest you cover luggage with plastic.

Rental Cars can go anywhere. Northwest Territory Visitor Center in Dawson City was very helpful and showed us encouraging pictures of tiny little smart cars on the Dempster. We bought it. We carefully drove a Nissan Altima (thank you un-named, unwilling and unknowing rental car...More

Take a truck or SUV, and drive up the Dempster highway, at least to Tombstone Park (100km up), or North Fork Pass. Beyond that, you want to take 2 spare tires and an extra jerry can of gas. The Dempster is a truly legendary, beautiful...More

Drove the Dempster in my Subaru, Forester from beginning to end and loved every kilometre. The scenery is dazzling and keeps changing as you travel north. I recommend getting the Dempster Highway Guide from visitors centre in Dawson or have Yukon Tourism send it to...More

Hi! My husband are considering travelling to the Yukon and maybe up to Inuvik in June 2018. We will be travelling with a Ford F150 and 21 ft travel trailer. It seems that most RV's are either campervans, motorhomes or truck campers, and I'm a bit hesitant about taking the trailer. Any advice?

Hi! There are people who travel with trailers all the way up to Inuvik (and since you are thinking to travel in June 2018, the highway will be completed all the way to Tuktoyaktuk and the Arctic Ocean), so it is definitely... More

The road is maintained all year as it is the only supply route for the artic circle. It can however be very muddy and covered in snow so a four wheel drive is a must during the winter.

We are driving the Dempster at least as far as the Arctic Circle in late June, 2017. Should I replace the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires on our Ford Ranger 4x4 with 10 ply rated tires? There are 12,000 km on the original equipment Wrangler tires. We are booked for Antarctica for January 2018! Getting to the bottom of the Bucket List. Thanks, Bill and Sandy

I think you could make it with your existing tires as long as you have a few spares. There are regular cars making the trip. We did it without any flats but we cracked our windshield when a rock hit it from the road. If you... More
