A local that helped us with the parking meter station suggested we go across the square from Notre Dame and visit the Bank of Montreal to see the columns, which were gorgeous, and the museum. It was an interesting little bit of history tucked away inside. Don't try to go past the lobby for pictures, that's a no no.

Founded in 1817, Bank of Montreal is Canada's first bank. The Montreal main office at 119 Saint-Jacques was built in 1847. The Neoclassical building was built to impress -- and impress it does. Anyone can enter during business hours. Gaze up at the dome as you walk in. The main hall is impressive, with columns reaching to the roof and... More

Take a moment to step into this fabulous old building and be awed by the interior design. Check out those columns! It's a quick, free, stop on a great walking tour of Montreal.

While I wouldn't come here just for the museum (unless I was a banker of course), we did visit this on our walking tour of the old city. It was very well done and interesting! Check it out.

I was there 2 days ago on a long but pleasant walk down from Square St Louis, then down to Chinatown, and there is a fountain with some fine sculptures , explaining the founding of Ville Marie, as Montreal was called initially,The Notre Dame Cathedral is great if for recollecting and praying (free); the chappel in the back is more... Worth a quick look inside and walk about. Lots to see and much to read about the history of the bank. It is across the square from the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.

This is worth stepping into just because of its jaw dropping columns and statues. We were actually attempting to exchange money and were turned away! Staggering architecture and structural layout. Take a minute to peek into the small, original bank museum and currency display. Polar opposites!!!

A small but interesting tour on how banks ran before electronic devices got so advanced that you could nearly eliminate the employee

One should not make a special trip into vieux Montreal to see this site, however, if going to tour Notre Dame or linger in the Plaza, do not miss the Banque. It's free! It would take only a few minutes to view the "museum". It consists of only a few antique banking artifacts. Nothing sexy there. BUT do not miss... More

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
