I visited in the Summer, when the weather was beautiful outside. If the weather is pretty outside, you need to take advantage of the sun, however if it is raining or snowing then the Underground City is the perfect destination. It is easily accessible via the subway. There are lots of stores and restaurants all underground, be careful it's so... More

More like a mall. We could not find anything worth calling an underground city. It's mostly several malls connecting - that way you can walk for miles and miles in a warm place if It's rainy or cold.

the underground is a collection of your normal mall stores situated in downtown Montreal. the nice thing is that when the weather is bad you can shop till you drop as everything is connected underground.

Great place to dodge the weather but expect to get lost and make sure to find a map, it’s a huge complex underground filled with shops and food.

With over 30 kms of tunnels, you could seriously become a mole person, and with the extremes of HOT humid summers and bitterly cold winter winds one can see why this refuge was developed. You can find everything here from shopping malls, to restaurants, to hotels & the metro connects it all ! Easy to get turned around but very... More

Montreal has an extensive network of tunnels that allow you to get around without braving the elements on the street. Be forewarned, though: It's pretty easy to get disoriented. Hesitation and puzzled looks draw help quickly from even lunchtime workers racing back to the office.

The underground city really comes into its own when the winter grips the city but we enjoyed it as a respite from the summer heat. There is virtually every kind of shop, service and restaurant down here and it is a great place to explore, covering a huge area. Just keep your wits about you and look a the signs... More

Basically an underground mall. There are many entrances/exits so it can be confusing trying to make sure you know where you are coming out.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighbourhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
