Witness the social and mechanical life of Canada's early industrial revolution. Housed in a 150-year-old Waterworks, this National Historic Site preserves two 45-foot high, 70-ton steam engines, perhaps the oldest surviving Canadian-built engines. The historic Hamilton Waterworks is a Civil and Power Engineering Landmark. The museum offers guided tours, various permanent and changing exhibits and features special events for the whole family, including Live Steamer Days from May through October.

Took our two grandsons to Family Day visit of the museum after it being recommended. The adjacent exhibits offered were ok but of limited interest to our 7 and 4 year old boys. The tour of the main museum was interesting for the adults but a bit overwhelming and much too long for children. In fairness the tour had way... More

Hello hunterdune, I was very disappointed to read that your visit did not go well. Our staff are trained to engage children in tours so that they learn and enjoy their time along with the adults and it is unfortunate that this did not occur. Please don't write us off just yet. If you are from the area and are... More

Coming through Hamilton we decided to stop at a few tourist destinations and I'm glad we did! Renne was amazing! She was very knowledgeable, extremely friendly with a good sense of humor. The tour is less than an hour, and very small. I would suggest looking in the summer as they have big trains you can ride!

We had a great afternoon celebrating Thomas Keefer's birthday with cake and a free tour. Our guide Phillip was amazing. He had my 4 year daughter engaged and interested in everything. We will definitely be recommending other people visit and we will likely be returning as well.

Fabulous museum find in Hamilton! An interesting story two 70-ton steam engines. The guide Phillip was enthusiastic and made history come alive for us all. This is a rare and amazing find!

My husband and I visited this museum recently on a whim and did not really know what to expect. We chose to have a tour instead of going through ourselves. I very much recommend the tour-- the museum does not have much in the way of exhibits or signage so it would be almost impossible to interpret without a guide.... More

I enjoyed the tour but my wife and daughter were not impressed. I'm technology minded and loved the 1900 era steam powered pumps and the beauty of brass and mechanisms. The best part was when they operated the steam pump via electric motor and you could see the flywheel, pumps, valves, cams and levers moving. The tour guide was extremely... More

Went during Doors Open Hamilton and wondered around. Took a steam mini train ride around the museum and it was fun. A bit far but worth a few visits.
