I was fortunate enough to be in Halifax on a Sunday morning prior to returning to Montreal on the excellent Via Rail Canada 'The Ocean' train. The Cathedral became a Basilica in 1950, more than 65 years ago. It has a Gothic exterior. The interior looks somewhat like a ship's hull, very appropriate due to Halifax's huge connection with the... More

You must take time to go inside this beautiful and historical basilica. The interior is deisgned like the hull of a ship. The upper stained glass depicts Old Testament and the lower stained glass depicts New Testament. Stay to hear the guide tell the history of the church.

It's definitely pretty, but after exploring the basilicas over in Rome it doesn't seem quite as nice. It's definitely worth stopping in though, it's right downtown close to everything else anyway, so not at all out of the way. And since Halifax seems to think it's a good idea lately to tear down all the old buildings and replace them... More

This is a huge church, almost overwhelming. Very beautiful and requires respect. Tours available but you must plan ahead as times are limited.

If you are from Hailifax you know where the Basilica is. This was always our meeting ground during university days. This beautiful old church has been here since 1899 and is proud to state it has the tallest granite spire in North America. I always loved coming here for mass at Christmas .

We had a day in Halifax off our cruise ship, so decided to walk the streets. Coming across the basilica, we were very impressed by the exterior, but once inside were truly amazed. The windows and architecture take your breath away.

Impressive granite Gothic Church with high spire. An understated interior with white vaulted ceilings and little of the pomp and circumstance in most Basilicas. Amazing stained glass and simple crucifix on the alter. Nice to see that is is a working church. A congregation still utilizes the building. Worth a quick stop.

The granite spire is really amazing. The Basilica is beautiful but not ostentatious. Well worth the walk.
