Overview
The best part of this tour is the down-home hospitality Sam tries to deliver with every ride. There is no real set schedule, so we have a bit more flexibility in how we do things. Sam will help you from the time you first write to the time she hugs you goodbye at the last stop and beyond if you're traveling to anywhere else that she is familiar with. Get to know other travelers and share once in a lifetime experiences along the way.

This is a very scenic route we do a few times a year. We never get tired of the fishing villages on the way and the farms in the valley.

We had two days in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the end of a holiday - one day to explore the city and on the other we wanted to see something of Nova Scotia outside Halifax. We chose this trip with Alternative Routes as the most comprehensive we could find, and because it was with just a small group of 7 people. We booked online from the UK, a very simple process with prompt contact from Sam, the delightful owner-driver, and we were not disappointed. She picked us up promptly at the hotel and took us first to the must-see tourist locations of Peggy's Cove and Luneneburg, and that's where most of the tours from Halifax end. But Sam took us on to the other side of the peninsula where, amongst other things, we discovered the wonderful white wine of Nova Scotia and encountered the amazing sight of thousands of sandpipers resting on the rocks during their migration. Throughout the trip, Sam was a delightful host and guide who obviously took great pleasure in introducing people to her native land; she knew what was going on in the area and conducted the trip flexibly to take advantage of it. It was a long day - something over 9 hours - and I nearly deducted one star because it was fairly cramped in the vehicle, but decided that would be churlish because it was a super day. So if you only have one day to get a taste of Nova Scotia, this is the trip for you.

From the moment we were picked up to the moment we were dropped off, Sam made sure we had an enjoyable day and personable experience. She had a lot of knowledge of the area, and shared many stories and anecdotes from locals about events and places on the tour. This made the tour feel like we were being shown around by an old friend rather than a tour operator. We were taken out to Peggy's cove, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg and Wolfville in the Annapolis Valley (with the occasional ad-hoc stop along the way). Sam made sure we had enough time in each place, and we never felt rushed or that we were missing out on something. I would recommend this trip to anybody who is visiting Halifax and wants to explore the broader region. Thanks for the great day Sam!

I need to knock off 0.5 star as she was late and I was afraid she might no show up, but I will say Sam is a knowledgeable and amicable tour guide with excellent communication skills. I'll also say she's very attractive, but I was with my spouse so I couldn't say much, lol. The great thing about the itinerary is that it is not rigid and she will ask the group if they are ok with modfications . For instance, I asked her if Hopewell Rocks was worth it and she suggested a place in Nova Scotia (which I will not name as it's one of her competitive advantages) that was comparable and added that to the itinerary. I mase the mistake of booking via Viator, but so it via the web site. If you're unsure, just email her and she'll get back to you swiftly. Regards, The Young, Quiet Asian Couple from Toronto on July 31

Had a great day out with our guide for the day, Sam. Prompt pick up and only a small group of 5 in total. Sam told us some great stories which were very funny and she is a great, safe driver. I would recommend this trip as it was great with no dramas. Sam, if you get to read this i hope you finished your scarf. :)
