Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Perhaps Saint John City Market siphoned off many visitors, or the void of people may have been attending a street fair that weekend in June. Since the tour group was on a tight schedule with many attractions to visit, I had only a few minutes to walk through the area. Sadly, it was enough. Given the street fair, don’t take my monocular view of this site as a recommendation to or not to visit. The time of morning I was there, few people were milling about. Perhaps nightlife is more inspiring.

This interior mall connects the Hilton hotel to the historic City Market via two overhead pedestrian tunnels. It contains a food court, chain stores, and several local shop including artists. A library and swimming g pool complex is also attached. Good option for avoiding the steep city streets along with either hot or cold weather.

Maybe this place is hopping in the summer, but on the beautiful Saturday afternoon that we visited, it was dead. There were more store fronts that were empty than actual stores, there were about 3 restaurants in there. They had a handful of vendors set up in the center area. The escalator was under repair, our hike up the stairs proved to be a wasted effort. There were a couple of offices up there, everything else was empty. Looks like a nice stage in the mall area could be popular to locals during the summer.

This mall likely benefits from cruise ship passenger traffic. Being by the water, it isn’t that central. I’ve been passing through for over 25 years. Stores come and go, likely marginally successful. The library and New Brunswick Museum account for some of the flow-through traffic. When staying at Saint John Hilton, I sometimes come here for a quick meal in the food court or dine in one of its restaurants. I’ve also purchased travel necessities from some of the retailers.

too many people are confusing the Market Square area (the one by the Hilton Saint John) and the City Market (the one by the Delta Brunswick). The Market Square is a great architectural accomplishment whereby some 7 older buildings (from after the Saint John fire) and the area behind have been assembled into a downtown mall which houses many restaurants, pubs and the New Brunswick Museum. The area outside has many restaurant patios and is connected to a boardwalk area on the bay. Lots of outdoor historical signs and public art pieces make it a perfect place to meet. We were there the week before Canada Day so they had a stage up with live music - just great!!
City Market is the Farmer's Market area - also good to go too

Every time I go to Saint John, I always make time to take a jaunt through Market Square. There's just about everything there that one will need, from books to suits and a lot in between.

So very sad. "Poor" is he perfect description of this area. The Irving oil refinery across the way shamelessly dumps pollution to the point that huge gobs of unsightly foam! an oil slick and putrid smell emanates from the water as it swirls powerfully from the strongest tides on earth. As a citizen of the US, I am shocked to see that Canada ( I always think of Canada and Canadians as valuing their resources and being more civilized than we are) allows this sort of thing to take place at all, and Irving is so brazen in their criminal ways. God help them --if fracking comes to New Brunswick -- they are finished! That the beautiful and mighty Saint John River should be treated this was is a sacrilege --- the market square is clearly MUCH diminished by the cesspool in front!

We visited this market when were on a cruise. The streets of St John's are old, with brick buildings...I wondered if it was even worth going ashore, since I was feeling queezy from some bad lobster bisque in Bar Harbor. We walked to the market and upon entering the lobby we spotted a museum. We love museums, so we paid the nominal fee and spent 1+ hours learning about whales, ships, wildlife etc. Terrific place with a pleasant staff.
Next, we explored the mall....a modern, ingenious place that carried us up the steep street. We zigzagged up via escalators and ramps until we reached a marvelous old farmer's market at the top of the hill. Along the way I'd been distracted by the nice clothing shops, but we were limited by time and the amount of goods we could fit into our luggage.
The old market was delightful...clerestory windows allowed sunlight to fill the space and warm the old wooden beams of the high ceiling. Over our heads, artist's fish dangled from cords throughout the shopping area. Everything from jewelry, to local food products and sweatshirts was sold. We bought t-shirts and sweatshirts, knowing they would have to be mailed back to our home. The quality was too good to ignore. I wished to stay longer, but missing our ship wasn't an option.
Near the dock was another surprise....an outdoor market with local crafts. My husband bought me earrings from the sweetest lady. I fantasized about buying the beautifully made tartan capes ....wearing one of those in Northern CA would be a fashion risk I'm not bold enough to take. I'm glad we skipped the excursion to the reversing falls...our adventure was terrific.

While exploring the area we came across this underground mall. The Art Club is housed here and they have local artist originals. Great shops! The New Brunswick Museum was housed here too. We grabbed more local, quality, inexpensive gifts/cards in their gift shop. I was in shopping heaven!

It's like a mini-mall, with a few shops & several restaurants (indoor & patio) ... all of them overpriced!! What makes it unique is the clock tower & 'people sculptures'. You can see it all in about 10 min.
