The Bastion is an enduring local icon in the third oldest city in British Columbia. Built in 1853, the three floors of the Bastion were skillfully crafted using traditional wood working techniques by workers of the Hudson's Bay Company. Over the years, politics and land deals saw this sturdy wooden fort moved twice. Today it is Nanaimo's most recognizable landmark. It is managed by the Nanaimo Museum, and also houses a seasonal Tourism Nanaimo Info Kiosk. While the Bastion's timbers are original, the interior represents activities of the early mining post from 1853 - 1862. Today, this former Hudson's Bay Company building is a symbol of Nanaimo's history. The Bastion is a "must see" destination for visitors to Nanaimo. The Bastion is open 7 days a week from May long weekend through Labour Day. The cannon firing ceremony takes place daily at noon when the Bastion is open. Group tours of the Bastion are available for booking during the off-season.

Currently on winter hours so not open to the public on a regular basis. There is some posted information that gives an historical overview of the site. Worth a stop.

As it was mentioned in so many reviews of Nanaimo's attractions we came to check on it in January 2017. It was closed till March, so we did not have a chance to get inside. From what I saw from outside, this building is not that well maintained (considering historical value for the city). No signs around it to explain... More

Would liked to have looked inside. Only open for tourist season. Was told by our hotel they have a canon firing but that also seasonal or unless a cruise ship stops by.

This old lighthouse is a landmark in Nanaimo and a tourist attraction, where many pictures of it have be taken. It is close to where the Waterfront walkway is.

Our kids wanted to stop in throughout the summer months, they loved it!! The stairs, the tools, the cannons & guns, everything had them wanting to go back. They loved it enough to have their Grandparents take them back :) A unique place with an interesting history! Will be back next summer :)

This is an historical site on the waterfront that speaks to British Columbia's British past. It sits adjacent to the wharf where you can see commercial fishing vessels and pleasure craft of all types and description.

Really nice to walk around on a sunny day. Also, everyday of the summer, they fired the cannons at noon and that was pretty amazing!
