Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This giant lake can be viewed and accessed from multiple communities. We spent time at the lake in Vernon. Local friends told us that part of the lake was quiet for a Sunday (ie few boats) and as small town folks we appreciated that quiet. If you enjoy doing things in the water, the options are seemingly endless.

This lake reminds me a lot of Lago di Garda in Italy
minus the mass tourists in Italy
It offers everything, Great hikes , bicycle routes,
beaches everywhere, Wineries, fine dining,
great fruit stands,
in short this is the jewel in Canada

When visiting the Okanagan, one will inevitably come upon Lake Okanagan – it’s impossible NOT to. This pristine body of water, the largest in the Okanagan Valley, stretches on for 135 kilometers and runs alongside the communities of Vernon (in the north), Kelowna (at its mid-point) and Penticton (south). Over 30 beaches dot the lake and strongly hint at its recreational value; in fact, during summer, it’s not uncommon to see people enjoying the sandy/pebbly beaches, boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking and even pedal-boating. Outside of wineries, I’d say Lake Okanagan is perhaps the defining symbol of this region of BC.

For me, though, I most often associate Lake Okanagan with the Ogopogo – the cryptid said to inhabit these waters. When I was younger, this “monster,” like Nessie of Loch Ness fame, captured my imagination. I remember the family and I were driving through the Okanagan in the early 1990s, when I was less than 10 years old. I was bound and determined to see the Ogopogo. As such, when we entered a lovely stretch of highway adjacent the lake, I basically demanded we stop . . . and wait. To their credit, the folks humoured me and parked for nearly an hour. As we waited, I thumbed through my newly purchased OGOPOGO book by Arlene Gaal. Sadly, we came up empty-handed!

This past summer my partner and I enjoyed the sights of the Okanagan, including the lake. As we drove along the highway, we both commented on the “what if” scenarios: “Hey, what if Ogopogo rears its head out of the water right now!?” We know that’s not likely, but it’s still fun to imagine! If nothing else, the legend of Ogopogo adds colour and panache to the region.

While it’s fun to imagine “monsters” like Ogopogo existing deep below the surface, I tend to appreciate the First Nations understanding of Ogopogo as a “spirit” and “protector” of the lake. In this way, the legendary Ogopogo becomes much more than a fantastical creature; it transcends the cartoons and becomes a poignant metaphor for sustainability and the importance of environmental stewardship.

Lake Okanagan, as a physical body of water, is a symbol of the region. It is rich in recreational opportunities but, at the same time, it – and what dwells within – can teach us much if we have the ears to listen. When you’re visiting the Okanagan, make sure to stop, appreciate and enjoy this lake!

Very enjoyable lake and area to explore. The lake tends to be very busy and some areas can get congested, but it is large and quieter areas can be found.

Excellent location and nice facilities, but poor management. No light on the corridor to see the door lock, the first door lock didn't work, I got moved to another room, owner spoke unintelligible English, receptionist wouldn't come to help open the door. Such a wonderful site definitely deserves a more professional and client-oriented management.
