At the entrance to Boothbay Harbor, and fully visible from the public landing at the tip of Southport Island, is the 1896 Cuckold Lighthouse. This is continuing to be reconstructed as a historical and educational site by the Boothbay Harbor and Southport Island community. It was an amazing vista from the vacation home of late actress, Margaret Hamilton, who is most notable for her film role as the wicked witch in “The Wizard of Oz”. A legendary tale of this lighthouse, which may or not be true, is that a bachelor keeper grew lonesome and went ashore to find himself a wife. He did so, and she moved into the Cuckold with him. She soon became bored and badgered her husband to find a piano for their tiny home. He diligently searched and found a piano, which he bought and transported to the light station – no easy task. Once the piano was settled in, it soon became clear to him that his wife only knew how to play one song…..which she played….day and night. Between the isolation of the station and the repetition of this song, he apparently went “around the bend”. He took an axe to his wife AND the piano, thus murdering both! Kudos to the community for keeping this lighthouse alive and a part of the rich history of mid-coastal Maine!

Visible from the Southport Town Landing at the end of route 27. Also visible across the inlet is the former summer home of Margaret Hamilton (Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Beautiful location accessible only by boat...with permission.

A leisurely drive from the downtown area to us to this very scenic area. My wife had to remind me to "keep driving"

She's a beautiful lighthouse at the tip of Southport Island, shining from her own little pile of rocks. From land or from sea, she's charming.

Good view from the road. Did not attempt to go further. Low tide left exposed rocks and seaweed. 3rd L H of our trip.
