Elk Island is a hidden gem near Edmonton, always worth the trip. Sometimes, the bison cooperate and appear along the roads and trails. It's always picturesque, with lakes and wetlands interspersed among the low hills. Trails vary from a few minutes to several hours or more.

My kiddos and I enjoyed walking part of the trail around the Beaver Pond. It was a nice day, though the trails were still snow packed. Our jogging stroller made it just fine though. I can't say that Elk Island Park compares to Waterton Park, but it was still beautiful and was a nice outing to break up this crazy... More

Most people, and who can blame them, go West from Edmonton to visit Banff and Jasper National Parks. However, if you have the time and can go East for an hour or so (much closer), you'll come to this really beautiful and understated park. If you want a quiet walk through the hills and beside the beautiful lakes of Alberta,... More

Went for a drive to see buffalo. Didn't see any but, enjoyed the drive through the peaceful park. Would like to visit in summer next time.

We've hike on to the other side of the highway and it was nice.. We've seen 2 buffaloes so far and tons of buffalo poop :) but anyways, the scenery is great it never changes but for a place like Edmonton this is one of the best activities to be at away from the busy life of city.

My partner and i go hiking here every couple weeks and i must say it is absolutely beautiful. yes even in the dead of winter it is still stunningly calm and peaceful. The paths on the trails side are not cleared or packed down in the winter so be sure you are ready for the challenge, pack a lunch and... More

I visited this place with my family and did not spend much time there during the visit. We basically drove through it but even in such short visited we got to see different wild animals including a few buffalos. (Note: I visited this place in Fall 2015. I put March 2016 because it would not give me the option to... More

This park has great picnic areas, some playground equipment for the kids, some great nature watching paths ... biking is great out here too. Be sure to be aware of your surroundings, the buffalo really do wander around everywhere, and while they aren't generally aggressive (aside from mating season), you do not want to corner one unawares. A great park... More

The park is not the most exciting ne in Alberta. The main attractions are the wild bisons which you have a good chance to see.

I visited close to dusk, upon the advice of the park rangers. I saw several bison, elk and many beavers. It is around a 20-30 minute drive from Edmonton, and in my opinion a must-see if you are in the area. How often can you see these animals in their natural habitat?
