Whyte Avenue (also known as 82 Avenue) is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed, and now runs through Old Strathcona. It was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911. Old Strathcona is Edmonton's main arts and entertainment district, and is also a shopping hub for local residents and students at the nearby University of Alberta. Whyte Avenue, now a heritage area, is at the heart of this district, housing many shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

It is such a pleasure to visit an area with good restaurants and independent retailers. Makes a nice change from the malls with all the same stores and merchandise. You need to dress warmly of course but it's worth it. The white avenue district is bustling with people of all ages - Saturday's being an advantage if you like to... More

I love this shopping area of Edmonton. There are blocks upon blocks of unique stores from giftware to clothing and shoes. Having grown up in and around Toronto, now living in Calgary, I find Edmonton has a grunge feel that I enjoy immensely. I always look forward to the Canadian designers and local Edmonton labels that are highlighted in the... More

Whyte Ave really has everything; great shops, spectacular restaurants, and to top it all off, an amazing night life. It's got businesses for everybody, including two escape rooms!

Whyte Ave is a great place to visit for shopping / restaurants or just finding a place to walk. There is a huge variety in what you'll find. A bit later in the evening it changes to primarily a bar scene and is a lively atmosphere

What a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. I used to live along Whyte ave so I was spoiled a little. It has fantastic little shops from clothing to antiques to old book shops. There's something for most people.

We enjoyed all the different shops that were open. The historical architecture was great to look at. Some funky trendy restaurants where we had good lunch. It was worth the parking expense and the so so weather.

Unique shops, good food, and a great place to window shop. Whyte Avenue is one of Edmonton's hottest places to go, with original buildings, brick walls, and a wonderful farmer's market just off the main road on Saturdays!
