We went on a tour on a motorless boat through the lagoon guided by Margarito, aka El Hombre Serpiente, who we met at the beach in Zicatela. It turned out to be one of the greatest natural experiences of my life, we saw a variety...More

I loved swimming in the lagoon at night - the water was warm and, thanks to bioluminescent plankton, silvery when disturbed by my hands or body. Or the boat. Or nearby fish. Our guide had life jackets for anyone who was an unsure swimmer. Really...More

don't miss this great opportunity to see lots of birds, beautiful vegetation. Go with Javier in his boat to his parents home on the "Barra." You will love it. Miles of private beach. Eat a diner of Lagoon fish-- Yum Yum

We did one of the night tours to see the glowing plankton! It was very nice and the water was actually pretty warm. The only thing that crosses your mind every now and then are the Alligators that actually live in the Lagoon, but our...More

The title is a line from "The Descent", by Jeff Long. You'd have to read it to understand (5/5 novel, so go!) We went because of the bioluminiscent plankton in the lagoon. You go at night, ask around Puerto for the tour vans, they pick...More

It appears that the night tour is the big tourist draw, but if you want a wonderful birding experience Lalo and his son are expert guides. We saw over 40 species on a wonderful morning on the lagoon. For lunch we stopped at a lovely...More

Touch the water to see it light up. It's a peaceful place to swim at night with the stars above and luminescent water.

I can only comment on this natural wonder for its night time wonders. We took an evening boat excursion with Pascon Travel to enjoy this huge body of water at night. The night sky was brilliant ( living in Toronto, I had not really seen...More

I was lucky enough to visit during a bioluminescent phase when there was no moon—perfect conditions for a glowing night swim. We took a boat out into the depths of the pitch-black lagoon and then jumped overboard into darkness. The bioluminescence was thrilling, but be...More

We went on a lagoon tour with Javier Santos who is very knowledgeable and friendly. We also enjoyed lunch prepared by his parents on the beach at Puerto Suelo. What a nice day!

You can check the lunar calendar to see where your trip falls during the moon cycle. I can not recommend a bioluminescent tour when there is a lot of moonlight, but during the darker 1/2 of the month, others have said it is... More

To hire kayaks, no tour operators are needed, just take a collectivo or taxi to Puesta del Sol lodge/restaurant. Go early, it gets very hot in late morning.

We tried to go in December-just last month, but the algae wasn't lighting up yet. This is what we were told so we didn't go.
