The short drive from Puerto Escondido is well worth doing with this magical lagoon! Make sure to go after dark if you'd like to swim amongst bioluminescent plankton, and be prepared to be wowed.

Yesterday my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a bird watching tour with Evi of Lalo Tours. Evi picked us up promptly at 6:30 am from our hotel in a clean air conditioned van. We drove 20 minutes to the north side of Laguna de Manialtepec. There we started an amazing tour of Laguna de Manialtepecon in an eight-person motorboat. Evi... More

Arrived in Puerto Escondido from a long UK flight and the evening tour a few hours later was suggested where we stayed. A bit hesitant but went for it. The driver picked us up and made 2 more stops for others on the half hour trip to the lagoon. We stopped at a bar near the lagoon and they gave... More

We did the evening photoluminescent plankton tour and it was incredible! There were lots of boats going out while we were there (our had around 10 of us on it), but the lagoon is very large and the boats tend to stay away from each other. Heading out on the boat, the boat driver was Spanish, and the guide tried... More

a trip by small boat to the middle of a lagoon in the middle of the night in order to jump into the water and experience the glow of the algae. I would skip this event.

I wasn't really sure what to expect on this one. We went with Manglar tours from Playa Zicatela, and they arranged everything. There were around 15 of us on the tour, and after a brief intro to excellent lain what we were going to see, we went out in a low-sided motor boat into the middle of the lake, where... More

We did the lagoon tour along with the bio luminescence. Lagoon tour the best especially if guide is knowledgeable about birds and can speak your language...English in our case. The small boat cruises slowly down the channel to the beach by the sea...in time for a beautiful sunset. Bring drinks of your choice and swim attire. Mosquito repellant and flashlight... More

I would recommend going at night for the bioluminescents. Go on a night when the moon isn't bright, or better yet when its raining. The biolum's will be at there best when it very dark and the rain would add to the magic. Our night was dark, but no rain. Our tour started at 8pm with a van pick up... More

We took a van with about 10 people out to Manialtepec to see the bioluminescent algae in the lake. The van left at 7:30PM, and drove for about 20 minutes to the lake. Then you get in a boat, which takes you to the center of the lake. (I recommend you leave your stuff, including your towel, in the van... More

We tour Laguna Manialtepec late afternoon for bird watching and evening for the fluorescent experience in the water. Words can not describe it; unfortunately, cell cameras or regular video cameras can not catch the fluorescent color in the water but the experience is for lifetime.
