About
Just two kilometres off the main road to the North Cape is the picturesque fishing village of Kamøyvær. The idyllic setting and opportunity to meet the artist make the detour well worthwhile. A visit can easily be combined with a trip to the North Cape.

I saw some great&modern pictures of the artist in Honningsvag so as we have time in the Nordkapp area, we decided to visit the tranquille village of Kamøyvær and this place. We were not aware that the gallery has no regular opening hours, "open primarily for Hurtigruten/cruise ship shore excursions and bus groups" according to the website so unfortunately it was closed when we went there. We looked into the shop from the outside, it was nice, and then we took a short walk in the picturesque little fishing village itself.

I already started noticing some cool unique paintings up in the North Cape Center and then in a few places in Honningsvåg so then I wasn't so surprised when I saw the gallery "West of the Moon", but unfortunately it was closed due to covid, so I investigated a bit and found out there was a sister gallery in Kamøyvær so I headed there and found "East of the Sun" which, luckily, although it was closed, the artist, Eva Schmutterer lives close by and could stop by and let me have a look inside. Very cool unique paintings and ways to present them. Don't miss this place, you won't regret it.

I only had a brief time to stop in this lovely gallery in the tiny fishing village before getting back on the tour bus after wandering around and taking many pictures of the beautiful scenery. I soon spotted a really nice drawing of a puffin, and since it was our last day in Norway, I knew I was not going to get a chance to see one on this trip, so I bought the print, matted, and signed by the artist and named "Oskar". Eva took a few minutes to tell me the story of the local man named Oskar for whom she had named the puffin. I usually don't bring home many souvenirs of my travels, but this one has a special place on a bookshelf in my office.

Nestled across from a small fishing harbour, the Gallery offers clever artworks from stained glass, paintings and cards to bookmarks and crafts. All interwoven with serene blues and greens to vibrant orange and reds. Everything reflects the natural landscapes. Cash is accepted but cards are more welcome.

In the centre of the little (and I do mean little) town of Kamoyvaer across from the harbour you will find a small building the "East of the Sun" Gallery. Inside you will finds the unique works and artistry of Eva Schmutterer. These will include not only art but books and specialty handcrafts too.
After enjoying a finding some things to take home for yourself and friends walk up the hill and around the corner and enjoy more engaging and delightful views. This town of about 100 can be on your way to the North cape or the Horn.

We rented a car in Honningsvag, and visited this wonderful art gallery in the quaint village of Kamoyvaer during a day that also included the visitor center in Nordkapp and a boat ride to see puffins. The art gallery was the best part of the day. and one of the highlights of our 14-day cruise. Very easy to find, and meeting Eva, the artist, was a bonus. We ended up buying two reasonably priced prints and other items also. We are glad to have special souvenirs of our pleasurable visit.

This little gallery was a total surprise. Eva's artwork is vibrant and cheerful. They are mostly nature scenes. The colors are amazing. She was there and explained how she created the pieces. It is too hard for me to explain. It was hard to walk away empty handed so we bought a postcard. Then my husband went back in and bought a framed print. It makes me happy just looking at it. It is a great memory of a great trip.

Eva is a great artist, and always has a good story about "her northernmost life"! Her helping elves Jerôme and Thomas are likewise both helpful and cheerful. Now they also have a new shop in Honningsvåg city centre, but the village of Kamøyvær is still always worth the drive!

Beautiful and original artwork from a German lady that moved to Norway. And it's afforable as well. In my opinion it's the perfect souvenir!
