About
An underground museum has been opened in the former Kohtla mines. Join an excursion with a guide to see how oil shale is mined and the machinery and technology that is used to do so. Take a ride on an underground train and try your hand at drilling, using a real drill! The above-ground exhibits and underground visit take around one hour and a half to see and complete. The museum provides every visitor with a special jacket, helmet and miner’s lamp.Starting from 20 October 2011 until spring 2012 the underground exhibition at the mine is being completely redesigned. The other parts of the museum remain open for visits, and we still offer miners' lunches when booked in advance.

The tour underground was a very unique and authetic experience. Our guide was a man who clearly lives and breaths the mines, a total knowledge bank and super passionate about it. Although the main tour was in Estonian, we were given audio guides in Finnish and assured that the guide would also answer our questions in Finnish. He went way beyond, explaining many things in Finnish without us asking, and with years and other details.

We took a short ride in an electric mine train and got to see the guide operate massive machinery that were actually used in the mine. This was very cool, while at the same time offering a real look at the grueling, dangerous work of soviet time miners.

Highly recommend to anyone interested in a unique museum experience.

Very nice! If you want to go underground you should book A tour before visiting. There is cold, so take warmer clothes, warm jackets on museum is also available. Our guide was very good. I was suprised that lot of machines are still in working condition. 100% worth visiting.

It is super. Lots of history at many floors. And of course under ground. Really nice tour. One of our kid got little scared under there. Prepare for that too. Tour was interesting and as we didnt plan our time, needed to hurry a bit.

A very routine-breaking experience. Genuine and positively startling place off the beaten track. Service is good, story is educating.
NB! Booking is needed!

Definetly the best tourism place in north Estonia. You must book underground guided tour before visit (via email).
Guide previously worked as miner and now he is guiding tourists in mines. Excursion was about 1h long was very interesting.

Went there with some friends and our 9 year old. We had booked a tour in advance as you can not go to the mine without a guide. There are english and russian audioguides. Our guide was previously working himself in the mine so he had interesting stories besides only facts. Keep in mind that is lot of moisture down there so keep your warm clothes on under the clothes you get. Good idea to leave you hat and gloves as well during the winter. So cool that they showed the machines working and also the miners train you drove on.

Great idea to make museum out of not working mine. Everything is very authentic: you are dressed as a mine worker, and experience almost everything the workers have experienced (except the heavy work). Audioguide is available, but check it before going down, as one of ours couldn’t switch language from Latvian. Also, it will be noisy and cold in the mine, so I personally don’t recommend going there with kids under 3 years.

We were part of a group (you need to book in advance and with a minimum number of people) that attended the summer school at the Tallinn University (for all ages and really very interesting topics and there is also a winter school each year), and had the most awesome experience. We dressed up in mining gear for the cold and protection (hard hats) and photos. We all crammed into the underground train and then wait for the train to fetch the rest of the group. So we explored and took some awesome pictures. The guide actually worked in the mine and showed us so many awesome things! Some of the machines are still working and he started them for us. He also answered all our questions and then we had the most pleasant experience: we had our lunch underground! This was so awesome and the food so nice and the people serving it, friendly. Really highly recommended.

Went there specially for underground tour which turned out that you have to book it in advance and to go underground there have to be a group of at least 10 people. So we could not go underground and instead went to see just museum. Museum alone is nothing really much what to see or do. Basiy time and money wasted.

This should be in Europe the only museum that takes visitors to real mining. Nice that the old machines is still working and some of them showed during the tour.
Book the tour in advance! If you just show up, you might to wait for a long time during holiday season for guided tour.
