About
Just a short ferry ride from Cancun, this stunning stretch is known for its crystal clear turquoise waters and lush palm trees. Lounge on the soft white sand, take a dip in the warm Caribbean Sea, and have fun with beach activities like jet-skiing and parasailing. Book a snorkeling tour to see an array of marine life at the nearby coral reef or a whale shark tour during the summer months.
Playa Norte is also home to beach clubs and bars, and restaurants serving traditional Mexican cuisine and seafood. If you can't get enough, consider staying at one of the no-frills beach hotels.

- Caroline C4 contributionsshallow clear waters, GREAT beachquintessential BEACH on the island. Playa Centro where ferries and stuff come in is also cool but this beach is away from all the docks and is just a HUGE long beach. there are mini sections that might be private to hotels/bars along the beach but you can walk the entire thing. Men kind of loiter around with jet ski's and you can haggle for a ride, I got a 30 minute ride for $40 just talking to some guys who had theirs on the shore. There are a ton of beach vendors walking around selling fruit cups, clothing/jewelry, etc. Highly recommend stopping at the tiny bodega across from north gardens restaurant on the walk in to get an authentic michelada (80 pesos) to bring to the beach with you. the water is shallow for a LONG time so you can walk out into the ocean for a long ways and be safe and have a good time.Visited February 2022Written 10 February 2022
- sabrinak136New Orleans, Louisiana685 contributionsPlaya Norte....A Beautiful & Calm BeachPlaya Norte is the perfect beach for kids. The waters are such a beautiful shade of turquoise, clear, and extremely calm. Parents will definitely not have to worry about waves crashing into their very young children. Also, if you child is old enough this is the perfect spot for beginning snorkeling. If you are staying at Mia Reef there are paddle boards and kayaks to use free of charge. Playa Norte is also wonderful for just relaxing and enjoying the simple life. Please note that there are many day trips to Playa Norte from Cancun so the beach has the potential to become crowded but that was not a problem for us during our visit.Visited December 2020Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2020
- John T3 contributionsBeautiful Sandy Beaches! The north beach is very beautiful and also crowded but well worth visiting for the day. You can rent beach chairs at one of the many establishments on the beach and get food/refreshments served to you at your beach chair or go up and sit at their restaurant. Get there early for a good spot!Visited March 2020Written 28 May 2020

The beach is great!
It’s a hassle to get into the beach since it’s very overcrowded and no space to park the over rented golf carts !
Secondly, it’s very expensive for a few hours just to sit there and enjoy the sun, the sun and the lovely clear water .
We spent $300 usd , for 5- Pacifico’s, 2- lemonades, 1- piña colada, 1- fruit platter, and 2- coconuts plus 20% tip automatic included .
Overall to spend three hours at this beach, cost us $560 ( including golf cart, ⛴️ ( round trip) 4 hrs at the beach.
Definitely won’t be repeated this again since I’ve seen better beaches.

Fantastic Beach. Wade out 30 plus feet into the smoothe blue Caribbean. Many restaurants on the beach. Safe and friendly . Wirth the rip to the island bry ferry.

The sand is perfect, the sun is bright - and the water is an amazing shade of blue. It is really beautiful. Note that this is a popular area - there are a lot of people enjoying the sand, sun and water. Enjoy!

We rented a golf cart. Drove to the end of a public street that stopped at North Beach. A very kind man named Kenji set is up with two lounge chairs and an umbrella for $20 and was our server for the day. He was kind and prompt and attentive. The beach is amazing. The view is unrivaled. The water is crystal clear. Perfect day.

Playa Norte is great for a sunrise, sunset, or just about anytime. The sand is soft and white and the water turquoise. A great place to spend the day.

We went to Isla Mujeres to visit Playa Norte because it was widely spoken of with reverence - worth the trip…it was not. The island takes a ferry ride that costs average $100 for round trip (2 kids and 2 adults) - no matter what you hear, the ride takes no less than 30 minutes and the ferry schedule is not every 30 min because the crossing takes more than 30 min and that doesn’t account for boarding / disembarking (this is from Puerto Juarez). Once you arrive you are greeted to small streets and the lovely smell of gasoline from all the mopeds and golf carts (good luck parking those of you rent them; cost of $45). After winding your way past the many many many shops and subpar (all over priced) restaurants, you will find small beaches choked with people and chairs / umbrellas; All for rent for a price. The swimmable area is limited to accommodate the catamarans and excursion vessels and the water is not that spectacular so as to put up with all this nonsense. I wish we would have just stayed at our resort and enjoyed the beach / ocean there which was no better than the color, sand or feel of Playa Norte. Pass and so yourself the immense favor of soaring a wasted vacation day on this over touristy and underwhelming island and beach.

This is a beautiful spot and everybody knows it. Lots of resorts with chairs to rent. Crowded. The catamarans dock and the visitors can basically get in the water and wade to shore.

Playa Norte is beautiful. The water was warm, but cool enough to cool you off. We rented beach chairs and an umbrella for 450 pesos for the day. Most beach clubs are similar and then require that you buy food and or drinks. The water was so shallow, and such a beautiful blue color. It was a little crowded, but we didn't have trouble finding chairs. And it was fairly quiet. We enjoyed our day.

Thank you very much for answering my questions but I have one more. On average how much pesos should I bring on a 10-13 day trip? Or just for a beach day in Playa Norte please?

There’s a wide variety of options and most will take your credit card. So if you eat at a restaurant you don’t need cash. The bus to go around the island is 20 pesos. So round trip Punta Sur is 40 pesos on bus. Everything in Playa Norte is walkable and the street food is 20 to 60 pesos. I enjoyed the street food. What’s important about pesos is to have small bills and change. The vendors get frustrated if we hand them large bills for change even in the oxxo. Hope this helps
Taxis also are cash and a shared taxi is cheaper and available….collectivo.
If you have a Charles Schwab debit card you can use any bank ATM without fees. Always decline the bank exchange rate they offer you. So you could take out pesos as needed. I felt bad for a gal who exchanged money at a US airport before she got to Mexico for 3 peso difference than the airport in Mexico City. They told her the rate would be better.
How many pesos for 13 days. Start with 5000? Almost $300. Tell your bank small bills. Bulky for us to carry though.

I'm planning a trip to Mexico and I'll be in Cancun and later Isla Mujeres, what is the best beach to visit on Isla Mujeres? I felt confident about Playa Norte till I read a review from jmeleeS which basically described my worst fear.

We loved Playa Norte. We stayed right next to the cargo ferry, on the mainland side. It was very convenient for us, but our hotel was quite north of the regular passenger ferry. Was about $20 US, I used my credit card, didn’t have to have pesos for the ferry. It was a quick trip over and ferries ran frequently enough for us. Was a nice, smooth ride. There are lots of “beach clubs” on Playa Norte where you can rent a beach chair. They usually cost a small fee, plus they want you buy drinks and or food. I think we paid 450 pesos for 2 chairs, they did want cash for the chair rental. We ate lunch and had a couple of drinks, I used my credit card. We walked down the beach and chose a place that wasn’t too crowed or noisy. Some blast loud music. The water was a beautiful blue and quite shallow for a ways out. We enjoyed it. Hopefully this helps. Feel free to reach out to me. You will need pesos though. Some of the restaurants and smaller bars only take pesos. There are ATMs on Isla Mujeres.

What is the current situation at Playa Norte? We want to ferry over for the day, sit on the beach for the day without a mask, and would prefer to be topless too. We’ve got such great memories from prior years finding lounge chairs to rent, awesome conch ceviche, cold beer, topless and a very laid back vibe.

I visited in December however, I stayed at Mia Reef where chairs, umbrellas, drinks etc. are provided for free. You can obtain a day pass for a cost. In addition, we were not required to wear a mask on the beach. There are a variety of great restaurants where you can find food and great drinks. However, the topless thing 🤔I am not sure about. I saw many kids near Mia Reef so I would conclude it is not allowed near Mia Reef however, that may not be the case for everywhere. Also, the ferry is an easy way to arrive and there are many taxis to drop you off at the beach. Enjoy!

Is Playa Norte open to visit in December?
AstralTravel
Playa del Carmen, México789 contributions
If you are asking this because of the pandemic, yes it is open and I can't see why they would not allow tourists coming to visit.
You must have face masks at all times unless you are in the water or eating... at least for now. Maybe in December things will be different.
I just went there last week and it's a dream. Also not a lot of people so you have plenty of space to enjoy and to practice social distance if you are worried about that.

Public Beaches are not open at this time, if you want to swimm in the beach it has to be through direct axcess by your hotel resort, we stay in isla mujeres in hotel belo and we were able to enjoy the beach but we drove to playa norte and the other public beaches and they were all closed. You will still have a great time.
