The Gran Juego de Pelota is in effect the stadium used by the Mayan people to play their sport. A visit there would reveal the rules and difficulty and the unnatural consequence of the victorious captain. Located a short walk from the Kukulcan Pyramid.

The field or pitch where the amazing people who built Chichen itza used to play their games. What we loved most about it was the fact that when you stand on it or by it, you get amazing views of the temples that tower above...More

The guide gave us a fascinating insight in to the Mayan version of a ball game - although the losers having their heads lopped off was a bit much! Football today.... easy peasy!

Interesting site where the mayans played a game with balls (pelotas). The goal was a small circle and the balls weighted aprox.2 Kg. It was a mix of sport and ritual. The site has an interesting echo effect.

More sites at Chichen Itza than we had time to see on our tour, but we're going back, and it worth exploring!

Whenever anyone asks me what it was like here, I always ask them 'have you seen idiot abroad?' (British tv show) because it is just as commercial as you see on there, and it really is annoying. Still, you have to look past that, it...More

If you're wandering around Chichen Itza, you'll see this eventually. It's amazing to think about how a centuries-old civilisation had the technology to build effectively the equivalent of a modern stadium, though unlike the Coliseum in Rome, this was for a peaceful competition.
