This constuction at the Chichén Itzá site was once an astronomical observatory. The observatory is called "Caracol", that means snail (because of the spiral form of the observatory stairs) and is above a raised platform.

This building is a littlw outside the central area, I'd recommend visiting it after noon right before leaving the site, it is as beautiful as Kukulkan's temple and I'd say as important. After visiting read a little bit about it, I promise you won't be disappointed.

You'll find this place while wandering around Chichen Itza. It's one of the more intact and impressive buildings. We didn't have a guide with us, so we had to just imagine Mayan astronomers observing the movement of the stars and theorising with what scientific knowledge they had at the time and filling in the blanks with their gods and spirits.

Astonishing to realise the maya had advanced understanding of the movement of the planets hundreds of years before galileo was born.

A picturesque Mayan ruin! You can get a great shot of it through the doorway of the Mayaland hotel! Gorgeous! Definitely worth checking out!

We recently visited the Yucatan area for the first time, and i was looking forward to seeing the Mayan ruins in the area, when we got out at our hotel at the lodge at Chichen Itza, the very first ruin I saw (from the main entrance way) was the Caracol, needless to say, an extreme jaw dropping view, I took...
