Mezcal Educational Excursions of Oaxaca offers spirits aficionados as well as novices visits into the hills of Oaxaca's central valleys and beyond, of one to four days in length. Learn, photograph, sample, discuss. We visit distilleries using clay pot production, traditional copper stills and more modern facilities. Inquire regarding our expertise, testimonials, etc. Ask about our group weeklong packages where you learn not only about mezcal and pulque, but also Oaxacan cuisine, craft beer and pairings with food, chocolate, etc. Considering exporting mezcal with your own label, business plan, etc., or opening a mezcaleria? We are also consultants in this respect.

Alvin is both a mezcal expert and a great communicator: our day-long tour was a fascinating exploration of the process of making mezcal. It was also an enlightening visit to the rural world that exists just outside Oaxaca City. We visited several producers of varying...More

I booked this tour because I already had a little bit of mezcal knowledge, and knew I wanted to visit smaller, family owned, palenques instead of large factories. I got exactly what I wanted from this tour, and a better education than I thought I...More

Thank you for the kind words, and to those who have posted complimentary reviews in the past. Regarding the very small complaint, I try to provide as much information as possible in the first email I send to prospective clients, including about the lunch stop...More

The day spent with Alvin was hands down one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had. I’m not a mezcal expert, maybe not an aficionado compared to Alvin but I do know more than most I speak to about mezcal. He taught me so much!...More

This tour was so interesting and informative. It is a full day and an investment of time and money, but both well spent. Our lunch spot was great, too. And sitting at home tonight, months later sipping the brilliant mescal I brought back from the...More

Oaxaca has no shortage of people and places who will ply you with mezcal and provide information about it. But if you really want to learn about the liquor and the people who make it, there is no substitute for the Mezcal Educational Tours. Alvin...More

If you have any interest in mezcal whatsoever (which you likely do, if you're visiting Oaxaca), then this experience is a must. Alvin Sparkman knows everything there possibly is to know about the spirit and how it's made. This is entirely unlike visiting a major...More

Thanks for the kind words. But for those who start with googling my name rather than my company, the name is Alvin Starkman.

Alvin's one day tour of the Mezcal villages (Palanques) near Oaxaca City was a great into to the world of Mezal. We visited small artisanal makers off the beaten path that Alvin knew and learned about how mezcal is traditionally made, the varieties of agave...More

Thanks for the kind words. I must address "the other couple with us." My mezcal educational excursions are fully personalized, meaning that the day is reserved for you, or you and your partner, or you and your group, and no one else. You decide where...More

Alvin Starkman has an incredible wealth of knowledge when it comes to mezcal and the local agave industry. Highly recommend checking this out. You'll get to meet with local farmers and producers, and see how much work goes into creating each bottle.

We typically don't like tours, but Alvin put together an absolutely perfect 9hr. mescal extravaganza for ten of us. His knowledge about the types of agave plants, the processing and distilling, and the resulting varieties of mescal is extensive and overwhelming. Not only did we...More

Thanks for the kind words, and again to those who have previously submitted complimentary reviews. A point of clarification, however. The average day is about seven hours if I take out one to four people, but when it is a larger group like Keith's, it...More
