Great cooking class with a third generation traditional cook.
Really great cooking class! The teacher was Esperanza, a third generation traditional cook who really knows her stuff! She started by showing us around the market where we bought most of the ingredients we used, and let us try lots of local foods. The class was lubricated with plenty of mezcal for free (made by the owner’s family who make 70,000l per year). Plenty of food so go hungry! We leant a lot and would definitely recommend.

Highlight of our trip in Mexico!
We had the great pleasure of joining Esperanza for a day of cooking! We started in the market and learned all about the ingredients we were going to use..then came back to the house to cook tortillas, mole and salsa picante! We sampled Augustin's family mezcal which was the best we've tasted so far! The day was so fun and informative. We learned so much and had a great time. 5 stars would recommend to everyone! It's been a highlight of our trip in Mexico.

Great fun and delicious cooking class
Great cooking class led by Esperanza, with Agustin keeping us topped up with his family mezcal and providing the entertainment with tunes and good chat. We made delicious guacamole, salsa and mole, with clear instructions, everyone was involved and recipes to take home. Would 100% recommend. Thank you for a great day.

Our day cooking with Esperanza was amazing! From the trip to the market to buy ingredients, to cooking, laughing, and learning together throughout the day, we had a fantastic time. We made tortillas, chile rellenos and mole negro together and everyone in our group of 4 participated. Augustin was also a delight as our English interpreter and spinner of tunes (though Esperanza’s English is fine!). We absolutely couldn’t recommend this experience any higher.

We had an excellent day with Esperanza and Agustine. We began by meeting Esperanza at the market to buy ingredients, and then spent the entire day cooking tortillas, guacamole, red mole, chicken. We were absolutely stuffed full of food and Agustine provided great entertainment with food, beers and pouring shots of Mezcal. Esperanza is an extremely authentic and experienced cook, providing background knowledge on ingredients, technique and very patient with helping us make our own dishes. Highly recommend to do this with a fun group!

This cooking class was not only an educational and fun experience, it blew my mind. We had a lovely small group(including the sweetest little 5 month old, Ophelia). Esperanza met us in the zócalo and took us to the market. Her knowledge and being a natural with teaching created such natural energy through the day.She was so much fun! We learned red mole, different salsas, tortillas, and more. We had beers and tasted mezcal throughout the afternoon while Augustin chatted with us between courses. I am a chef from NY and absolutely fell in love. Highly recommend to anyone who loves to learn, eat, and hang with the locals!

Thank you so much to Agustin and Esperanza for this class. My 12 years old son and I took this class, and we had a wonderful experience. At first my son didn't want to do the class, I actually had to make him go and at the end he was fascinated, happy and proud of what he cook. Esperanza thought us how to make guacamole, quesadillas, salsa de chiles, and chiles en nogada which were the highlight of the class. Esperanza has a lot of knowledge of cooking and history, she was respectful, funny and answered all our questions. My son was so proud of his quesadillas than he even call it a master piece. To make the chiles en Nogada it took about 3 hours from beginning to the time we sit to eat them, but the work and the experience were worth it. We had to roast some chiles poblanos, peeled the chiles poblanos, prepare the filling with the seasonings, make the white sauce with milk, cream cheese and nuts, pomegranate seeds, stuff the chiles poblanos and prepare and decorate the plate. We have to say it was a delicious meal, an explosion of unique flavors that together make and exquisite meal. This was a culinary success. In our opinion the place was very clean and a nice family environment. Don't forget you have water, beer and mezcal.

My wife and I had a great time learning to make classic Oaxacan food. From salsa, to guacamole, chile rellenos, tortillas and mole. Esperanza is amazing and the class is laid back and fun. Augustin, who owns the home where the class is held is a great guy and we enjoyed getting to know him. The food was fabulous (best meal we had in Oaxaca). Highly recommended. Note this is not a class taught in a restaurant by a professional chef making complicated recipes you will never make again. This is a hands on, taught in a home kitchen, cooking local food and taught by someone who cooks for her family and others every day.

Esperanza will share her traditional Zapotec/Oaxacan recipes and techniques with you during the best afternoon you will have in Oaxaca. I have eaten at Abigail Mendoza Ruiz’s restaurant and I have to say the food we prepared under Esperanza’s direction tasted much better. Combining the great food with a generous supply of Augustine’s secret mezcal makes Cooking Classes Oaxaca my favorite activity in Oaxaca. If you like eating and want to learn how to make mole negro and a bunch of other traditional Oaxacan food from a great cook and a wonderful teacher Then don’t miss your chance to take this class.

We chose this cooking class because we wanted to learn from a traditional cook and esperanza did not dissapoint. We got to decide on the menu as a group, then shop for our ingredients in an incredible market tour. The food we cooked was so delicious perfectly accompanied with beer and unlimited mezcal in a fun party atmosphere. This is the perfect class for a group of friends looking to learn loads and get involved but also drink and have a really fun party afternoon. They are lovely local people, running a local business making yummy local food. I enjoyed my first class with agustin and esperanza so much I went back and did it again with different friends a month later.

Forget about doing the overpriced foodie tours of the city. This is the real deal. The cook, Esperanza, takes a bus from her village to teach this class and it was incredible. We made the most delicious black mole (amongst many other dishes) that we have tasted on our whole trip to Mexico. The host, Agustin is an absolute character and offers infinite amounts of beer, mezcal or soda if you want to loosen up a bit. A fantastic experience.

Starts at 11AM and lasts until about 5 or 6pm.

We had a great class with Esparanza! She took us to the local market and showed us where the produce was coming from. She also provided vegan options for 3 of us in the group that required it. Only 4 in the group total so it was a great size. Definitely is an all day event so be prepared to leave full and tired. We met at 11 am and went until about 4 pm. The complimentary beer and Mezcal made for a fun environment with lots of great conversation so we overstayed a little (oops). Would definitely recommend.

If you want to learn to cook traditional food, you should go here. Esperanza is an excellent cook! We wanted to learn how to make mole and she let us choose which one to make. Besides that she prepared a lot of other very surprising dishes which impressed us a lot. We went to the market to buy the ingredients and she explained everything about the products. Agustin is the most welcoming and friendly host. If you are looking for a good place to learn more about the Mexican kitchen, here it is!
