First of all my opinion is heavily influenced by my only basic Spanish level. I would certainly enjoy it more if my Spanish was better. Descriptions are in Spanish only and none of guides available at the time I were there was speaking English (I saw a couple guided by an English speaking guide inside, so they do exist, I... More

I'm an archaeologist and I nearly missed this gem on a recent visit to Oaxaca. It's poorly advertised and I nearly didn't visit the place. The archaeological exhibition is in a number of rooms in the convent building to the north of Santo Domingo Cathedral. The convent also has a wonderful botanical garden if you are interested. The exhibition has... More

Time to relax after visiting the site and drink in the relic.s the Spanish did not want or could not find. Well laid out and easy to view as well as photograph, the information available is easly read and in the main international language. So take some time to see this place.

I was really looking forward to visiting the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca. A friend of mine had raved about it, saying she had rented an audio guide which was very informative and interesting. After a fairly surly attendant had taken my entrance fee and checked my tote bag, I was then subjected to a search of my purse.... More

The museum has a first class collection that is beautifully displayed in a wonderful old building(formerly a convent) connected to the Santo Domingo church. The curator is on record as saying that he would like to see the museum as world class . Every other great museum that we have visited had audio guides in multi languages,as well as hand... More

Some of the exhibits are not well lit but this former monastery has spectacular colonial architecture: thick walls, deep window casements and long cool corridors. Don't miss it.

BEAUTIFUL grounds & building with great views and places to sit and soak it all up. Wonderful artifacts representing historical cornerstones in Oaxacan history. The shops surrounding the plaza are great and the plaza is a great place to people watch.
