As far as I can tell, there is no good reason for a tourist to visit Mercado Sonora, or the adjoining Mercado Merced. The warren of narrow aisles and the constant pedestrian rush discourage browsing or lingering. But there's not much to see anyway. There's...More

I love Mexican markets, but the Sonora is not the biggest nor the best in Mexico City. However, my grandson and I went there to visit the witchcraft section. As a market goes, I would only give it a 3 star rating. But, the witchcraft...More

I was reluctant to take the extra effort to go here based on other Trip Advisor reviews but our guide convinced us it was worthy. It was not. Full of tacky toys, sad dogs, cats and roosters in cages (this area was troubling that I...More

Single young female traveling alone. Found it very entertaining and authentic. The witchcraft section is neat, but I especially loved seeing all the animals. Exercise normal precautions, be polite and considerate, and I wouldn't anticipate any problems. Loved it!

It is everything you have already read about. But here are some tips: 1. If you take the metro and get off at Merced, you will be in the extended Mercado Merced. To get to Sonora, turn left out of the metro and keep the...More

This market is enormous and full of a diverse offering of local goods - produce and meats, artesania, live animals, natural remedies, etc. The market extends to the other side of the street and seems to go on forever! So much fun just to walk...More

Was curious about this market because I have read that exotic animals and weird witchcraft stuff was sold here. The place smelled pretty bad and the animals were kept in small cages. Didn't want to stay long enough to find out what kind of exotic...More

Arriving here is a chore. You leave the Merced Metro and turn right though the shoes and kitchen stuff outside the Merced. Finding the street is an issue at first. The vendors have taken over the entire sidewalk area and it is a maze. Head...More

You can see them fixing and doing some weird stuff, on different locations inside of the market, while some others are only selling stuff, I don't think that anyone in there are computer wiz , or even an iPhone users, if you... More
