So glad we booked this trip while there are still butterflies to see. We booked a private tour thru Viatour which provided a private car and driver to take us from our hotel in Mexico City. I am very happy we did this as the...More

We learned that the monarchs travel to 3 or 4 different places while wintering in Michoacan. The last place that they gather before heading to Texas is on Cerro Pelon in March. They start their journey north to Texas in mid-March. Cerro Pelon area is...More

Just a wonderful experience to see these butterflies. It was spring on the mountain and in a few days they will be leaving to fly to Texas and have the first egg laying.

We visited these two locations on consecutive days, both of which were sunny, so the butterflies were in the air as well as on the trees. We have to disagree with the Lonely Planet guide on this one but perhaps we were just lucky. We...More

I visited Cerro Pelon reserve which I hear is the least accessible site to see the butterflies from and also the place you can see them the closest. You are required to have a guide go with you which you can hire at the gate....More

It was a nice place, very butter-tiful. The employees were all very nice. It is quite a bit of walking but worth it! The horses were all nice as well.

Yes, I would consider going then, as the butterflies are making their trip to Mexico now. They should all be in place by then. They don't fly much I understand during the colder weather.

If you're in good physical shape then I'd say go for it. Know, however, that from the trail head to the colonies it's about a 1.5 mile hike uphill at an altitude of approximately 10,000 ft., so unless you're already... More
