Old sanctuary build on 3 consecutive enclosed areas/terraces, with the old church in the middle. Not all well kept, you can find rooms to rent with nice views, a small museum, the old and the new church (with painting from the XIV century) and the Black Madonna as the main attraction for the pilgrims.
There are plenty of activities to do, besides the religious side of the sanctuary: many hikes in the forest and in the mountain (up to 2300m), rock climing, a botanic garden, an adventure park and free ski slopes for the winter months.
The food in the area is good and fairly cheap.

The most peaceful of places, very good alpine Italian food and lots to see.
Aug 2019
If you love architecture, good food and nature, you'll be in your element. Really peaceful, you can visit the churches where the Madonna is said to have appeared, eat lunch of dinner of alpine Italian food, and you can take a cable car to the top where there is a stunning lake called Mucrone. Ideal place to take children. Wear hiking boots if going outside of the churches and restaurants. highly recommend.

A magical location, especially late at night and early morning

We stayed here for just one night. The drive up the hill was a bit of a challenge (lots of hairpin bends) but then one is rewarded by the most splendid view of the monastery complex and its churches on top of the hill. The botanic garden was a delight to explore and had very good information panels, some also in English. Since we arrived on a Sunday afternoon there were very many pilgrims wandering around the many cafes and shops and evening Mass at 18.15 in the lower church (the upper one was being renovated) was packed with worshippers. Once the last of the day visitors had left we still had ample time to wander the virtually deserted collonades and then to enjoy a good dinner in the Croix Blanche restaurant. Our bedroom was located immediately above the Reception and had a great view down the hill and over the plain below. There was nothing spartan about the room itself or the en suite bathroom. Both were most comfortable and very clean.
The sun poured down on the café where we enjoyed our breakfast under the arcades the next morning and we left with reluctance - determined to return.

Spectacular location with comfortable rooms

We stayed here for two nights to fly our hot air balloon in nearly Pollone. I wasn’t prepared for the beauty of this place...it’s a spectacular setting...or the size of the place, which is more like a small town than a santuario! Loved sitting for a coffee in one of the many cafes and drinking prosecco in the lower courtyard with the sound of the mass underway. But the highlight was undoubtedly the beautiful woodland walk through the remembrance garden garden - tumbling waterfalls, dappled light and great views! Will be going back again for sure

Day out with cousins

Well worth the visit but try to go during the week as it can be very crowded. Take warm clothes as you're up at nearly 4000ft just below the snow line. Wear good stout shoes as there is cobbled areas to walk on. Although there are many restaurants not all are necessarily open but the food we had was very good.
The view is fantastic if you get the weather.

Worth it

Visited in March and had good weather so it was truly worthwhile. Had lunch at a restaurant near the top, walked around (lots and lots of steps), amazing views and visited the church where there is a Black Madonna. Because it was off season, it was quite pleasant and not at all crowded but I can see that it has the potential to be a tourist hotspot in the summer.

We visited at the right time where there was only few tourists. The sanctuary was surrounded by mountains. The walk up to the basilica Alta was like a pilgrimage. I wish I could stay long to hike around the Sanctis Monte. The tranquility of the place could wash your soul and submerge in the environment to feel the magnificence of our creator!
