This is a nice, peaceful place where beauty abounds. Orchids were stunning and we learned a lot about the microclimates on St Thomas. The lady at the entrance gave us a nice overview and explanation which bettered out experience. We would return again.

Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden is a lovely semi-natural garden, which means its collections of orchids, bromeliads, ginger, etc. are mixed in with plants native to the island's forest. There are NO manicured lawns or fancy flowerbeds of European flowers. And that's wonderful. It feels like you are walking through a natural tropical forest, but with more and more varieties of plants and flowers than you would see if you just took a nature hike! And there are different types of orchids scattered through the trees everywhere, so there should always be at least a few orchids in bloom. Even though we weren't the only ones visiting, most of the time we felt like we had the entire garden to ourselves. Paths are mostly narrow, but there are so many of them branching off each other that it's easy to avoid other visitors. There are also areas where you can just sit and enjoy the plants and a view over the water. But there are lots of stairs, although most aren't very long or steep -- and you can choose how far down the mountainside you want to wander. (Most people will find plenty to see in the top half of the garden.) Informational signs provide some basic information on the ecosystem's plants and wildlife and you'll likely see a variety of birds, butterflies, reptiles, and small amphibians -- which are fun to watch and eat insects. (We didn't see any insects at all on our visit.) Some plants have information about them too, but not all. And I appreciated not having signs everywhere. Staff is super-friendly and helpful and the little shop has a few snacks. There are also lovely orchids and other plants for sale. While I couldn't bring any home with me, it was fun to dream about doing so! On the way out we left a donation. The $10 admission fee is fair, but there are very few places where the native forest is being managed and preserved like this, so it's really a treasure. And it's a lot of work to keep up. We combined our visit with stops at various overlooks and other sites on this part of the island.

It was a beautiful and relaxing experience for the whole family! I went there with my husband, and my sons ages 9 and 7; and they loved it, too. I definitely recommend visiting this botanical garden.

I thought going would be a sure thing because of the reviews, but I was greatly mistaken. Be ready to climb up and down staircases the entire time you’re there. There were little lizards everywhere and a super small pen for turtles, but we didn’t see anything else. There was a sign with things you can see and had a huge picture of a tarantula. After that my anxiety kicked in and of course every single dang pathway in the gardens, there are plants sticking out that you have to push through and they hit your face/body. Doesnt hurt, but it was super uncomfortable. Pee before you get there because apparently they don’t offer their restroom because of covid and they don’t feel like sanitizing. The owner made me feel bad for having to use their bathroom, I’m still shocked they try to not let people use it. It was a huge waste of time and money. We saw the same plants throughout the island! Total waste unless you want to hike up and down steps for a workout!

Dear J8067CB, I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your visit to Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden. Yes, we are located on a gently sloping hillside, since there is very little flat land in St. Thomas. Our website photos show several slides of our stepped paths. Thank you for your concern for our tortoises. We have land tortoises, not turtles, and they are currently located in their 5x 20 enclosure, with plans to expand to the east. All of the tortoises were donated to us and the recent addition of a few more may have made it look a little small, but that is why the area to the east is already cleared and ready for the expansion. The sign with the 1 ½” x 2” photo of the tarantula is part of our “Critters and Night Creatures” interpretive sign. The tarantula, along with 13 other photos of frogs , bats, and centipedes is to illustrate the local wildlife that exists in the garden, and throughout the island, during the night hours. It is only one of the 20 interpretive signs including information about birds, butterflies, lizards, iguanas, and many of the specialty plants located throughout the garden to assist in providing educational facts about our tropical landscape. We are not a hotel property with highly manicured vegetation and have had many complements on our tendancy to be more natural, which at times may mean that the plants may lean over into the pathways a bit. I am sorry that you found that uncomfortable. And yes, and noted in bold letters on our website home page, we have temporarily closed our public restrooms because we do not have the staffing capable to properly sanitize them to prevent the spread of covid. Since most visits to the garden are one hour or less, we have not had any complaints about this change in our operations. And finally, it is unfortunate that you were not able to appreciate the hundreds of exotic tropical orchids and varied bromeliads as well as many other unusual plants located throughout the garden that you will not see at any of the local hotel properties. Yes, the trees may be similar, but it the quantity of unique labelled plants throughout the 2 acre garden is what makes Phantasea so much more different than any other place on St. Thomas. Since you did not enjoy your visit, and feel that your money was wasted, I would be willing to refund your full admission price. Please contact Viator and forward them a copy of my response and I will approve your refund.

Worth the visit if you are spending several days on St Thomas. The property was in great condition and the workers were very knowledgeable about the different plant species and types of horticulture. Bonus: there’s a great view of Magens Bay from the trail!
