As a child interested in geography all I knew about Trinidad was the fact that there was a big pitch lake. Reading about it many years later and before going there, I saw that it was often described as a rather dull place like a flooded car park. So I went there with not too many expectatiions. To enter the... More

We really had a great experience at the pitch lake. Our guide was Cyril(Doggy) he did a great job. It is best to wear shorts so that you can go right out into the lake and see first hand the the actions that are happening out there. Just be sure to follow your guide and do not lose focus.

My husband and I when to the Pitch lake without any reservations, I am really impressed on how accommodating they are. Our tour guide was the best and I learnt a lot from him. This place is nice to visit for educational purposes as well as for fun dips in the different sulfur pools. Entry is $30. TT per adult.

The road getting here is not the best. It is asphalted, but with lots of irregularities and potholes. The view of the lake itself was not very impressive. There are quite a few locals (some also said they were official site supervisors) who will stop your car as you drive in to see if you want a guide. We did... More

Decided to do this tour with friends and all of their kids. We started very early and packed food, drinks and other supplies from the night before! Kids need to pit stop as the drive is very long from the capital. Thought that it was educational for the young ones. Most of them splooshed around in the water that was... More

This "moving lake" of asphalt is like a volcano and has a crater in the middle that constantly moving vertically. It'd hard enough to walk on except for the crater in the Centre that consists of soft, sticky asphalt. Truly a "Natural Wonder of the World".

The Pitch Lake is beside the village of La Brea. It is the largest of the world's three natural asphalt lakes and worth a visit. The lake is an old volcanic crater, approximately 75m deep, with a surface area of 40ha. The asphalt is viscous but the surface is semisolid and can be walked on. Bulldozers can ride over the... Visiting the pitch lake is like time travel and space travel combined. Early European explorers stopped here to tar the bottom of their boats, the landscape is otherworldly and you learn on the tour that the pitch is world class and used for the asphalt of JFK and other major airports. You can even take water as a souvenir as... More

I went to the tar lake during the dry season, and it still was a beautiful sight. It's something rare that most people may not ever experience. I enjoyed it.
