More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts...

More than just an art museum, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico hosts concerts and festivals as well.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), a non-for-profit organization, was inaugurated on July 1, 2000, as a legacy for the Puerto Rican people. The mission of the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is to enrich the lives of its diverse audiences by making accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR engages diverse communities to facilitate learning experiences about the visual arts through: the growth of a well-researched permanent collection exemplifying significant and representative examples of Puerto Rican art from the sixteenth century to the present; a dynamic program of exhibitions supported by engaging and exciting educational and cultural programs that collectively deepen the understanding of the role of the visual arts in the human experience and contribute to the creation of a curatorial legacy; documentation, research, interpretation, preservation, and conservation of the collection and the visual arts patrimony of Puerto Rico; and alliances with local, regional, and international museums and institutions to advance the knowledge of, access to, and understanding of the visual arts of the world.

I liked the paintings although it is not a very large museum. Good show case of local culture. Worth an hour or so. Not a place to spend the day.

We came across this by accident and just wandered in. Entrance is free. The exhibition space is quite lovely, well organised. We saw two interesting exhibitions and the third was unfortunately closed. We were able to learn quite a bit about the exhibits that we did see from attendants.

First of all, let me say that the price of admission is VERY low! For less than $7.00, this museum is a GEM! At 3 times (or more) the cost, I would still say this. My boyfriend and I visited one morning and arrived just as they were opening (the day after Thanksgiving). It was rather empty, which was nice... More

A beautiful open air museum with a wonderful collection of visual arts including oils, videos, etc. Don't miss the small Botanical Gardens behind the museum...audio tour is worth the low cost.

Every time I visit San Juan, I visit the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. This time, I joined the museum. The art is stimulating and inspiring. The outdoor garden is calming, peaceful and simply nice to walk through. The location of museum is good.

The museum features art from local artists. The building is quite big (5 floors) but has a lot of empty spaces. Almost all the art is in one floor floor. It is bigger than the Museo de Arte Ponce but has nowhere near the quality and quantity of their collection. It does feature some works from local greats Francisco Oller... More

This museum has small galleries with a manageable number of pieces in each. When we were there, they also were running a film festival, which was free. Don't miss the beautiful trees on the side of the building. They look like someone has poured orange and green paint down their trunks. The trees alone are worth a visit.

Looking for something to do on a rainy day in San Juan? We were. We suggest you try something else. Of the five floors, one is for administration, another for classes and a third for kids, leaving only two for exhibits. Most of the gallery was devoted to some kind of new curatorial imagining, where they find ways to think... More

This museum is located in New San Juan closed to the Metropolitan Area and Plaza Las Americas, the biggest commercial center in the Caribbean.
