definitely worth it! (Tour not necessary)
This waterfall is amazing, and yes, you can swim in the water once you get there. Mostly, my purpose in writing this review is to let people know that you can just hike to the fall yourself, you do not have to book the horseback tours. We knew we did not want to ride horseback so I had done much searching beforehand trying to figure out if it was necessary, as there are no other types of tours offered. In the end, we did pay for a hiking guide, we don't regret that decision but it was not a necessity. We pulled into a parking area, paid a parking fee and negotiated the guide. Altogether we paid around 2300 pesos (about $50) and there were 4 in our group; if you were booking any online tour you'd probably pay $65 or more per person. The benefit was that our guide routed us through a shortcut that knocked off quite a bit of walking. However, the main path was very clearly marked. It would be quite easy to pay for parking, (or perhaps park on the road for free), and then just walk the path. At the top of the footpath, before you start down the stairs to the actual waterfall, there is a booth charging an entry fee, 50 peso per person. There is also a gift shop at that spot, they take pesos, dollars, apple pay, and PayPal. Absolutely wear good walking shoes, and take water, and be prepared for a hike. There are several decent hills. My biggest tip would be, especially if you want to hike, go early. We got there about 8:15am and I think we got back to our car a little after 10:30am. At that time of day, there were only a few other people at the waterfall. It was really awesome to be able to enjoy it on our own. Also, the first of the horseback tours were just beginning as we were coming out. I can tell you, if I'd had to share that path with all the horses, that would have absolutely changed our experience! The guides doing the horseback tours really were not keeping to one side, and we had to crowd the very edge of the path a couple of times. Go early, if you want to hike.

    Nature at its greatest expression
This place is incredible and imposing. The journey lasted approximately 20 minutes each way from the entrance to the jump. We did it on horseback with local people. The beauty of nature and the care that exists there is something extremely noticeable, we did not see garbage or anything that showed disinterest in the place, that is a very positive point. Within the excursion there is a staircase with almost 300 steps, you have to take it slowly since it is not completely regular, but nothing out of this world. There is a souvenir market that also sells food and drinks for anyone who wants. It is somewhat annoying when people approach you wanting to take photos of you in exchange for "collaboration at will", this is abundant.

    Unmissable
A must-see. I saw it another time in 2008 but this year, in August, which is rainy season, I saw it even prettier and more flowing. Not suitable for people with mobility problems, because there is a walk that is a bit hard if you have any knee, hip........go down no problem but I struggled to climb back for the horse, I arrived amateur hahahajjaj There are 2 accesses, in one of them you see another smaller waterfall before that of the lemon. The other access was made in 2008, I did not know that there was another waterfall, very nice although small compared to that of the lemon.

Amazing but a very long day!
We just completed this trip while on our honeymoon. We departed our resort (TRS) In Punta Cana around 6:40am via a small shuttle bus. After a 30 min. ride we were transferred to a large charter bus. The bus stopped at a small gift shop for about 20 minutes then continued on bringing us through several small towns for around 90 minutes. Other than the falls this was my favorite part of the trip. Seeing the local culture and ways of life was amazing. We then took a 40 minute ride on a catamaran to the other side of the bay. We boarded a third safari truck shuttle that took us to the ranch where we were given our horses. The horses did look tired but not malnourished. The path to the falls is now paved and the terrain would be a mild hike if done on foot. Descending and ascending the 180+ stairs was definitely the most exhausting part of the trip. The falls were amazing!! The water is around 75 degrees but it's very refreshing. After the falls we were given a nice authentic Dominican lunch. We took the safari truck back to the boat then traveled to Bacardi Island for an hour of swimming and cocktails. We arrived back at trs around 7:40 pm. The 13 hour excursion was tiring but well worth the price paid. We would definitely do it again!

El Limon jump and animal use
The place is beautiful and leaves us without words!!! It is worth knowing and passing the trail. I only leave my opinion regarding the use of horses to make the trail. I found very suffering for the animals that carry people and often run the risk of falling and hurt not only them but us who are riding. I didn't like that part!! I think the city should invest in improving the track so it can be done on foot and not using the animals for it. Except that at some times the drivers lose their patience and end up beating the animal so that it doesn't stop. Beautiful place! But unfortunately I do not endorse the use of animals for this purpose.

    Very nice!
Very nice walk! But don't be fooled! No need for a guide at all! There is only one way. Go all the way to the end of the dirt road, you will find paid seats at 200Dop, then take a ticket at 50Dop for entry to the park in the last little hut and the path is straight! We'll have to cross the river, keep your shoes on! Don't let yourself be fooled by the very insistent guides who will tell you that you won't manage on your own, really nothing complicated!

Journey to the lemon jump, samana
The experience in the waterfall was beautiful, only we went in the rainy season and it was very risky to walk up and down the same way we did, we could not fully enjoy the waterfall as within 3 minutes of arriving we had to return because it was risky as the river could rise and so it was. We decided to walk, to avoid being a weight on animals. As we went down to the river there were several guides and they were charging us to cross paths, we felt that there was little empathy from the people who guided the horses, as they said that if we did not pay they would leave. In the same way we risk and cross. If they can swim, they can do it very carefully and have someone expert. Otherwise, we recommend paying. EYE only applies if the river is aggressive and there are difficulties crossing. It took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get up and down, on horseback it is less time.

Christmas Day at El Limon Falls
We drove up to the falls on Christmas Day. Along the way we were intercepted by a vendor on a motorcycle that got asked to park at his place. After speaking with him a little bit, we decided that’s not where we wanted to walk in and drove to the top of the mountain. Like the other reviewers, everyone was pretty persistent about taking horses, but this trail up there was paid for most of the way and he just had to walk around some of the horse poop. There’s been so much rain here that the falls were so strong that you were not able to swim in. Still glad we checked it out. We paid 250 pesos to park our car and along the route we had to pay the Park entrance fee of 50 pesos each. Here are the GPS coordinates of where we parked at the trail head: 19.26426° N, 69.45778° W

    Essential visit
A very nice experience. We have been guided by Caesar, from the Nomadic Caribbean agency, who has taken into account our needs at all times. It has led us on the best path, considering that it rained and was all muddy. It is a very pleasant walk and not demanding at all, and above all that the end is worth

There seems to be no detailed explanation of how to get to El Limon falls independently from Las Terranas.
This is how to easily go about it.
Take a Guagua (minibus) from La Bodega Bar in Las Terranas to El Limon town centre they run every 20 minutes, journey time around 30 minutes, cost 100 Peso.
Walk around 1km towards the falls on a tarmac road until you pass a church on the left hand side of the road, turn left then walk 500 metres until you reach the payment booth to the falls, pay the 50 peso entry fee.
From here it is a 2.1km walk or horse ride to the falls.
A lot of folk on here have said the horses are in poor condition but we did not find that to be the case.
Anyway, we choose to walk it, there are 3 stream crossing near the beginning of the hike up to knee height, recommend to wear water shoes, the terrain is very rocky and muddy after rain.
It took us 1 hour to reach a cafe overlooking the main falls, from here you have to negotiate 250 steps down to the smaller of the two main falls, about 15 minutes, from the lower falls it is a few minutes up to the main 50metre high falls.
We are in our 60s, we left Las Terranas at 8.45 and returned to the stating point at 13.00

This was a pretty strenuous hike, especially with 7 and 10 year old children. However it was doable for them. It was more difficult due to the muddy conditions and needing to dodge so much horse poop. Once we got to the series of falls it was worth it. The first fall was a smaller one but much less crowded so we hung out there a while. Then we proceded to The Waterfall which was beautiful but crowded and lots of tourist activities (people selling you many things). Coming back, stop by the little tienda to grab a cold drink before heading back down the trail to dodge mud and horse poop.
I have to say the most annoying thing about this hike is actually the harrassment from guides. We drove from Las Terrenas and when you make a right onto the road from El Limon, you will start climbing the mountain. But now very far there will be a very informal sign for Salto del Limon (coming from the other side the sign is more formal). You turn left into the dirt road at that sign. That's where the guides point to a small parking lot on the left. We did and parked there but the guides harassed us all the way up to the trail (saying we NEEDED a guide, this trail is mucho pelligro) and did not leave us until we paid $8 for parking (which I think the guide just pocketed). We ended up hiking out a slightly different route, where the official park ranger was and it was only $2 to park and without any harrassment. So when you turn into the paved road, if you are doing this on your own, KEEP DRIVING! Follow that dirt road until you see the ranger station (small) and beginning of trailhead. Have fun!

The truth is that the Salto is worth it, it is very beautiful but getting there is an adventure…
The first leg of the trip is done on horseback. It can also be done on foot but with a lot of risk to life, since it is full of mud and does not have marked areas to hold on to.
During the trip I have suffered a lot for the horse and for the volunteer guide who leads him as he walks along the route with him.

The final part, more than 100 steps, also with the risk of slipping, which have to be climbed again to return to the beginning.

Once on the jump, it is very beautiful. The truth is that it impressed me. Going swimming and lying down to watch it, it's great.

I recommend wearing closed shoes for the tour, which you love very much as they will get covered in mud.
For bathing, it is better to use booties, as you have rocks to access the water and they are slippery.

When our driver first picked us up, he was rude, did not speak to us. He continued picking up other people and then eventually stopped on the highway with no explanation as to what was happening. Eventually we were told we were waiting to be transferred to another bus. We were transferred and the lack of communication continued. Our tour guides did not explain anything well everyone was extremely confused. On the beach we were told we could sit in a specific section and when we did a man from the restaurant told us we needed to pay or move. After lunch I am not sure what happened but the restaruant workers and tour guides were arguing seemed to be about money. Once we arrived to Samana once again no communication was given. Upon arrival at Salto Limon, already the volunteers were asking if we had money to tip, rather than attempting to make us comfortable. Two people in our group were injured and until we spoke up being spanish speakers they did not care. After our ride my tour guide let me horse go and the horse nearly ran into the street, due to carelessness. They continued asking how much we would be tipping and when. This was extremely unprofessional and unpleasant. On our ride home, once again the lack of communication was severe. We once again stopped on the side of the highway and wete transported, without communication, it was very unsettling. The tour stated it would be 10 hours and ended up beinf 15 hours. We missed dinner at our resort and were unable to eat due to being over 5 hours late. The tour was not properly advertised, saying their would be rocks and all types of dangerous things. This was extremely unpleasant and I would not recommend this excursion to anyone.

Poorly managed trip. A lot of waiting around, very few speak english so most of the time I was unsure what was going on. The guy who was to pick me up went to wrong location and then treated me poorly when I was finally picked up.
You spend a ton of time waiting around even though weather delayed the trip.
The whales were cool, the horses were poorly malnourished & the workers would put too large of riders on them and them whip them the entire time down the trail. I wanted to cry.
We were herded like cattle, it was not well organized.
When we got back to the bay for the boat ride back to the marina where we would catch our buses 2 hours back to Bavaro, the military showed up and would not allow us to leave because it was dusk, we did not have enough life vests on board nor lights on the boat.
After almost 2 hours of confusion and over 100 people trapped in Samona, they finally let 1 boat leave. We rode across the bay, 40 minutes, clinging to strangers, thinking we were all going to die because by that point it was 8:30 and fully dark. We only had a flashlight to get across the bay.
I was picked up before 7am and did not return until 11pm while only being provided 1 tiny meal.
DO NOT GO ON THIS EXCURSION. The horse riding needs to be shut down. The waterfall is not worth the extra 5 hours on the trip to see.

Trip was excellent. Know where you enter as the hike can be 1.5 miles or 3+ miles from the top. Worth the trip, but be careful of some of the vendors. The horse people at the top between the shorter and taller waterfalls, you need to be careful. Also, if you can make it up would recommend not spending for the horses on the return as the walk down is quite easy. Would avoid the group with the sign marked parkeo parada el palito. However, the waterfall is certainly worth the trip--a must see if in Samana/Las Terranas areas.

For me and my wife the hike was maybe even better than the waterfall itself. We took an early taxi to the parking where the track starts. Then started walking around 8 am. During the hike we met no-one (until the cabin at the end where you pay 50 pesos to some locals). The hike took us around 50 min without being in a rush. I strongly recommend hiking if it has not been raining and the ground is somewhat dry. On our way back we met several tours coming with other tourists in horses/donkeys. But as we went early we got to experience both the hike alone and the waterfall alone.

We did this trip through Nexus tours. The route for 1/2 hour/45 minutes is a treacherous horse ride —and one feels very sad and sorry for the horses who are whipped to “vamanos “. And I also felt that the horse could tumble at any moment and it wouldn’t be his fault.
Muddy with deep puddles as well as a number of rocks with elevation changes. Upon arrival back, I saw a horse and guide rider slide sideways and go down. I don’t know if the horse or rider were hurt.
Then there’s the hike of approximately 18-20 NY floors..or approx 280 steps. Another half hour to 45 minutes? You just go down to the waterfall, where there are a lot of people, and then back up on really muddy and rocky terrain.
You will have a guide who will eventually tell you they aren’t paid and work on tips. I fell on the way down and then had trouble making it up. Make sure you’re hydrated and physically fit, as I was neither of these! We tipped our guides $20 each, but I wish we had more as they were the real heros. I tried to send additional tips through the hotel, to no avail…so bring plenty of cash!
At the top, before starting out, one could rent free boots, but if you wanted socks so your feet didn’t marinate in the sweat of others, you had to buy socks. None of this was clearly stated in the booking, except for the physically fit part. I would have worn better hiking shoes had I known.

Beautiful waterfalls that you can walk to.

The path is largely made of solid stones, although uneven and slippery due to the mud on and along it.
Some parts are over clay and boggy, especially if it has just rained (wettest part of the Dominican Republic) and if a lot of walking has already been done at the end of the day.

During the first fifteen minutes you will go through a river up to your knees three times, so water shoes/sandals are useful.
Then it's an hour uphill without rivers and you can wear walking shoes, although many also continue to walk in water shoes or slippers.
It is not so much a difficult course, but occasionally slippery.
It took us 1.5 hours to get to both waterfalls. Back 1 hour. Upstairs there is a small hut with a toilet and the possibility to buy something to drink.

If you take the path to the waterfalls from the main road, horse and boot excursions are offered. That's not necessary!
If you have difficulty walking or if you enjoy it, do it, but it is not mandatory. Be prepared that the horses also have to go up the bumpy path, so the horse ride requires some skill to remain seated.

If you drive down the path, there is a green entrance house to the end, 50 pesos per person (and possibly 200 pesos to park your car). Then the walk starts, which speaks for itself. No guide needed.

Your shoes get dirty, but we didn't think boots were necessary.

You regularly encounter horses along the way, but they seemed to be walking at ease, we saw no signs of abuse, as others wrote. There is often horse shit lying around, which could be a reason for boots instead of slippers.

The horses are treated badly, there cannot be any joy in riding those poor animals who are clearly not treated well or cared for at all. The hike is super muddy and honestly nothing about it was fun, me and my boyfriend decided to walk because we couldn’t bear the idea of making the horses suffer even more. Every horse also has a guide who makes the horses move with sticks they found on the ground, because they clearly do not want to walk anymore after probably carrying 20 tourists a day back and forth. The waterfall is mediocre, not worth the money and not worth the pain for the animals. Please don’t do this
