i will say right away that horseback riding is not my preferred cup of tea. haha it is the wife that loves these animals. that said, we traveled here for our anniversary and her birthday so how could i say no. we used this ranch many years ago when staying in the playa dorada complex. it was fun then and it was fun again. they are very close by the complex so transport back and forth is quick and easy. we went in slow season so we were the only 2 riders which was nice. the business has changed hands recently and the latest owner has apparently made some changes. they have some new animals and some update equipment. the horses seem to be in very good condition and well cared for. so did the many friendly dogs that share the ranch. both Angel and Alex have been here for many years and are great staff. our booking agent originally had us booked with another operator in sosua. we were not too happy about having to travel that far back and forth so we were very happy when they changed at the last minute. we did not ask why. pick up was on time. the pace was very leisurely. we had a beautifully scenic ride into the hills. some spots offered a great ocean view with a cool breeze while others were sunny and hot. there is a stop along the way (thank god haha) to rest the horses (and the riders) where you can have a water or soft drink. beer is avail for purchase along some gifts if you like. helmets are mandatory. closed toed shoes are always a good idea but if you only have sandals make sure they are secured strapped sandals and not loose flip flops. this is a great way to see the countryside and much quieter than the buggies or atv's. if you are considering riding as part of your vacation then choosing Lorilar is the right way to go.

Rancho Lorilar has merged with Rancho Salvaje and now you have the choice of so many different rides! I still booked through Joyce at lorilar@gmail.com as you then know all money goes to the Ranch and there's no 'middle man'! Chris, who bought Lorilar and went into business with Sylvie picked us up from Gran Ventana. She's lovely! The Ranch is currently being painted and there are new horses which are amazing, very energetic but still very safe if you are a novice. My 15 year old son learnt to ride here! We did the full say Mountain ride as we love to visit Mecho and Emma for a typical Dominican lunch and we also love the lagoon. Crazy Alex and Angel are still here and as much fun as they always are! You now have quite a few choices though. You can still do full day Mountain ride with lunch. Mountain/beach combo. VIP Mountain/beach with lunch and Sunset ride. If you come to Puerto Plata riding with Rancho Salvaje y Lorilar for me is personally the number 1 excursion and I would highly recommend it!

I contacted Rancho Lorilar back in October 2018 for our excursion for January 2019. I received a confirmation from Joyce that we were all set to go. We arrived at the Dominican Republic via Carnival Breeze. Joyce mentioned that taxi would cost around $25USD, and when we arrived, the taxi service wanted $40USD. We agreed, and headed to the ranch. We called the ranch as we were driving there and talked to Sylvia. She said we had no reservation, but told us to come anyways. The road was all torn up and was unable to reach the main entrance to the ranch. Sylvia was able to meet us in the back of the ranch, and I handed her my email from Joyce confirming our reservation. She said the horses were not ready. We asked if she would pay for our taxi and she said of course because we had children with us. We got back to port and the taxi driver told us that we had to pay him. The ranch did not pay for the taxi and we were stuck with the bill! I would not recommend!

This is THE place to go horseback riding in the Puerto Plata area. I'm very thankful to the exceptional tour guides and the amazing horses, so obedient and happy!! Joyce the owner is very funny and hospitable, a wonderful lady. Everyone will make you feel very comfortable on your horse. Joyce is fluent in English and for some that's also a plus! I've been on a number of horseback ride tours throughout the country and Rancho Lorilar was definitely my favourite!!

This was one of the best day trips I have been on. From the start ‘crazy’ Alex and Angel made me and my sister feel comfortable. I was a little nervous at first but Alex soon made me feel confident and had me trotting then galloping!!! I couldn’t believe how this was possible as this was my second time riding but it really happened 😊 I can definitely recommend this tour!
