STAY AWAY!
Vacation time is precious. Don't waste a single second of your life visiting the top of this mountain via gondola if visiting via cruise ship. . Unless you like spending your ENTIRE day waiting on line.
If you do not heed my warning, do yourself a favor before you buy your tickets. Go upstairs and see how many people are waiting in queue. Each gondola holds 17 passengers. Note that tour groups and other assorted people (we did not note a pattern but there are different color wrist bands) may be put into a gondola ahead of you.
I never saw an "express pass" purchase option.
A "one hour" wait in line when we.purchased our tickets at 1:10pm was 1 hour 40 minute wait. We arrived at 1:10pm and did not reach the top of the gondola ride until 3:05pm. Our ride was 9:11. Once we thought "it's our turn!", we left the waiting room area to continue to wait on the outdoor platform for a gondola at the top to come down for us.
The lobby had 4 musicians playing extremely loud in the confined space for the captive audience. They weren't bad but they were deafening. Deafening. Deafening.
Our cruise leaves at 5:30pm. When we arrived at the top, we immediately got on line to go back down, as the line appeared just as long as on the way up, approximately 5 car fulls in front of us. We never walked around, never saw anything.
You could taxi or bus your way back down the mountain. We checked and it would cost $50 US if you want a 4 person taxi to the bottom. Road down takes much longer than 9:12 ride up.
I did not think of asking for a refund but cannot imagine anyone is successful if they try.
We had time for this attraction so thought "why not" when we initially sat down in the waiting area. Maybe try and dispute the charge with my credit card company?
This tour took up our entire day on DR. Total waste of our day. The other tourist attractions should complain to this tourist attraction as we, along with everyone else at this hellacious place today, never got to spend any money anywhere else in DR.
At the top, when you get a seat in the building to go back down, it will be another 45 minutes to catch a gondola back down. Insanity. It's a 1.1 mile walk, downhill, to the port. It should be fast. We should make it. Vacation time is precious.

Wait wasnt very long but i wouldnt reccomend it for families with little children as the ride is a continuous flow and does not stop. you have to literally jump into the ride. the view is rather subpar in my opinion

Super side trip, takes about two hours to to do total. Try to go early if there is a cruise ship in town otherwise you are going to waiting in line. The cost is $10 per person. Also, as its on the mountain, its a nice break from the heat.

Excursion to Mt. Isabel is a great day out from your resort. Despite the Teleferico not working I encourage people going up in a rented car.
There're 2 roads up, each is around a 30 min drive.
For ascending we used the eastern road which goes through country side, and is in perfect condition.
When descending we used the western road which goes through picturesque villages, but here you must drive with caution as the road is in a very bad condition - uneven surface with many potholes.
Once up there's a beautiful view of Puerto Plata, Christ statue, botanical garden,etc...Count on around 2-3 hours for the whole excursion.

Be sure and drive or have a driver take you to the mountain top! It is a beautiful, lush green drive and the views are amazing. When you get there someone will ask if they can help by taking pictures. The guy who did ours did a great job with various poses and then led us to his jewelry table! No worries, you can so no and give him a tip for taking the pictures. The cable car was not operating when we were there, but we go back next year and hope it will be up and running at that time.

I have been up to this beautiful mountain a couple of times now and every time it's a beautiful experience. The air is very refreshing and nature around you is just stunning. It Its a very refreshing trip, with a huge drop in temperature compared to the coastline.

Is it possible to take a cab to the top of the mountain rather than the cable car? We visited a few years ago on a tour and would like to be able to see the gardens at our own pace rather than being rushed thru so that the guide can take us to his "cousins" stores.

Take a cab from anywhere to there. From our hotel it cost about $15 one way. Then go somewhere else after. It's nice on your own, in the park many hike trails and a cave and a lake. If you have guide, he can direct you, and explain about the flora and fauna. Be not careful, there are no dangerous animals or birds. Mucho cooler than at sea level, so ideal on a really hot day.
Hi, is it allowed to put up a tent on the mountain?

that would not be safe in any way shape or form
Hello, today, June 5th, we drove up to the cable car entrance gate in the afternoon and were told that is was close, not for the day but simply closed; until July maybe??? The car in front of us went through though and some people came to our car and offered to take us in. What's the story here?
thank you

We went there in March but we did go with a tour. They said it sometimes gets too busy, and as someone mentioned there is a limit to how many can go in a day due to the cable cars being small with a weight restriction. Maybe they were expecting tours coming in, other than that I’m not sure why that would have happened. The views were pretty amazing.

How much would it be for a taxi to Mount Isabel de Torres from Gran Ventana resort?

I would agree about utilizing a tour company for the excursion. If that's all you wish to do we used UBER several times for a mere fraction of a conventional taxi even with a tip to match the fare it was still far cheaper. I'll give you the example from the resort where we stayed (Lifestyles holiday) the local taxi fare was $25 USD each way. Uber maybe $5-6 usd and then I tipped the same to show my appreciation that they offered the same services at a great price. This will also encourage them to continue to offer their services. Used the same app as we do in the states. Credit card tied to the account. Some were leary about the conventional taxi drivers because i think they must heckle them. That said, we might stroll out of the resort out to the main drag to catch one. Any way, i'd check Uber when you arrive to see if any are in the area and I'd keep looking if you don't see any immediately. The next best is probably a tour company. All of the drivers were friendly and drove sensibly. Well wishes and safe travels. If you find this helpful please give some feedback with a thumbs up!

We are going on a Princess Cruise. We will be there one day 7am -3pm at Amber Cove. Is there a way to get to Mount Isabel de Torres from the ship area? Is there anything else to do near there?

You will find both taxi's and excursions available. The cable car can also take you to the top of the mountain.....very cool!

I noticed on their web site that it says the tours are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We will be there on a Tuesday. Can you catch a cab up there on a "closed" day? And without the hiking? Thanks in advance for any help.

We went on a tour from our hotel - Iberostar Costa Dorada that covered Puerta Plata and a ride up on the cable car. The guide did not tell the group that part of looking around on the mountain included walking down lots of steps to a cave. On the way down he was pointing out flowers and plants. Once done there, you then had to walk back up the other side, again all steps. It was very bad for myself due to asthma and other members of the group had problems to. If the guide had told us this, I would have stayed at the top and looked around. The cable car was magnificent, with wonderful views both going up and then returning down.
