This building and location has so much history to tell and you feel it when visiting this old fortress. The first in settlement in the Americas!

Lots of good history, cool looking fort. Guys selling stuff outside the fort are pretty aggressive and annoying.

Being the first country colonized by the Spanish in the new world, I expected a lot of old Spanish buildings and fortresses, but they don’t seem to have much of that, at least in Puerto Plata. They have a tiny fortress not quite worth the trip, but the view is ok. (I don’t know much Dominican Republic history so maybe a lot of the oldest buildings have been destroyed in their wars.) I felt uneasy, as I never saw cops around but thankfully we were fine. From my trip to Puerto Plata I’ll say that if you want a 5 star experience you may be better off in Colombia, Brazil, or Argentina, for example. Your dollars will go far there and they have a wider variety of architecture, climates, food, views, historic buildings and things to do. Caribbean service does not compare to South American, in my experience. If you must go to Puerto Plata and want a real 5 star hotel, stay at the Iberostar Costa Dorada hotel.

Did a day trip with a taxi so we could do our own pace. Stopped here and enjoyed the architecture as well as the walk and the little market that was setup
