I do not recommend visiting this museum at all. Extremely outdated and very poorly maintained. Shopkeepers harrass you to buy their goods. Poor lighting in the museum meant that the artefacts were hard to see. We were allowed to use the toilets before the (extremely...More

The Ambar museum is great, it's a very small informational museum that's air conditioned. It also has a small gift shop where you can buy the stones.

You are marched round this "museum" by an angry little man then Marched downstairs as they trap you in a room and try and sell you overpriced tat.

A very nice little museum in Victorian hacienda. Very interesting displays, including their mascot, an amber-encased lizard. We were the only ones there on a Saturday morning, and the guide gave us a brief description. Incredible "blue" amber, a type we've never seen before, is...More

8 year old child liked to watch the bugs inside the amber. Nice staff. Peaceful visit and a good break from the all inclusive hotel.

You get a good historical summary of how amber came to be part of the culture of the Dominican Republic.

This was part of a bigger tour so cant say bad things overall. It was neat to see the first few stones and amber with insects inside but got redundent very fast unless your into archeology.

This obviously isn't up to the standard of an American Museum but we didn't expect it to be. It is very clean, cool on the inside and has a lot of interesting things to look at! Learned a lot and they have a great gift...More

We tried twice to visit this museum, which is a bit of a drive from where we are staying in Sousa. Both times it was closed, despite the website saying it would be open. Very disappointing!

Hi Belinda, we stayed at Riu in January which is very close to the dock. You can see the Amber museum as part of a tour as mentioned in other responses or you can go on your own which we did. If you go on your own the cost... More

It is in Old Puerto Plata near the Cathedral. It is a fair distance from Playa Dorado. Can't say for sure how far but you cannot walk. Sorry I do not know more. We had a car and drove in from Sosua.
