Hey, it's an artistic "statute"

There is a certain visual appeal to this monument but it isn't totally unique. I like the colors which lend to the Latin flair.

The obelisk sits in the middle of a busy roundabout along the Malecon. The paintings on it are interesting but faded. It's not a destination by itself and you'll almost certainly see it if you're in the area of the Malecon.

Big obelisque with coloured pictures of indigenous people. You can come and watch but it is not anything worth closer attention.

Driving around El Obelisco has a special meaning specially now with the memorial to Las Hermanas Mirabal Couldn't get enough of it. Every time we drove around it I had to admire it. I remember back in the early 80s they had a live nativity during the Christmas holiday.

Did a drive by on return to hotel after Tres Ojos and city tour. Interesting to see, but I wouldn't make a special trip.

Once a monument to the former dictator Trujillo, it now stands as a monument to the many victims of his dictatorship. In this case women who refused to accept his rule. The obelisk has not changed shape, but the murals have changed its intention. It's at the start of Washington Avenue, next to the Parque Eugenio Maria de Hostos. You... More

interesting history given that it's something trujillo erected during his reign of awfulness. more recently, they made it a monument to the people and from the looks of it, as a memorial to trujillo's most famous victims-the mirabel sisters who are commonly represented as/with butterflies. this is not really a welcoming place-when i walked by there was a crazy homeless... A monument built by the former dictator to honor himself, now stands as a memorial to those who fought and eventually won freedom. This monument stands as a reminder to all.

This is remarkably one of those monuments that define this capital's face and yet is associated with a character that many wished had never existed: Trujillo. Sadly, neglected as the smell of human waste testifies. Notwithstanding, this is a must picture spot.
