What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

Stop for a mojito

Lovely square, it has been renovated and gives a good indicator of previous glory. Lots of cafes around.

On a recent visit to Cuba, our guide explained the meaning of the statue of the naked woman riding a rooster in Plaza Vieja. During the "Special Period" in Cuba when the Soviet Union dissolved, funds and goods were no longer forthcoming. People were starving and, according to our guide, were even eating dirt. Many women were forced to prostitute... More

A very nice plaza. It's one of the larger ones for the old town, and it has lots of restaurants and places to hang out in the square. And a fountain too. it's kept clean and nice.

This is a lively plaza with live music and several restaurants. There is a beer factory in one corner, a cafe/coffee house and several restaurants. It is nice to visit and have a drink or a meal. You can also catch some street vendors selling food.

A busy but also peaceful place, interesting buildings and everything from hotels, one of which changes money, to almost anything else you could want nearby. Not far away is a café which is so popular the line of customers queuing for chocolate drinks is very long and worth a look. Relax and enjoy.
