Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Rolling blackout started in 8/22. Pollution was bad and now they crank up the generators it will be horrible.
The air is already full of gasoline smell , burned oil from the old cars refuse/trash all over town with a little hint of sewer . N95 would help but then again with the heat and all ….
Most buildings lack paint or it's faded creating a diatopian environment.
Who ever did the urban planning for Havana must be in a nut house. The whole city is a nightmare. Design of towers - atrocious. Waste of cement.
The old colonial buildings are magnificent and some of the residentals homes have amazing design but there is always something missing . Paint faded or falling apart due to lack of maintenance or massive metal bars on doors and windows .
AC. Is a luxury. Yes , they have it in tourist taxis and nice hotels but remember that it’s a luxury most Cubans can’t afford. Most cars use wind to cool down.
No English ! most don't speak English.
Police state - plenty of military cars on street- no armed soldiers. But it's tense. Airport is full of 18-20 year old recruits running around with official task. Interestingly the women wear a mini skirt uniform. Real short short skirts - and one size tight and the boys one size bigger- comical.
It has to be intentional- some politburo official has a sense of perversion and humor.
No credit cards accepted -
No phone access
WiFi - again good luck.
Money conversion tricky and difficult
Everyone tells you not to use bank . They all know someone that does black market exchange. Have to find the person and plan to met and exchange (madness).
At this time Cuba uses parallel currency. Dollar/euro/CUP. Have each ready because for example airport does not accept dollar and large hotels don’t accept CUP.
In general American credit cards not accepted.
Ready . Set. Stand in line. Cubans have been conditioned in the last 60 years to stand in line. If there is Olympic competition they will win gold. Perfect line formation, unlimited delay, patient and no complaint.
Add 1-3 hour to anything that requires dealing with government- banks,airport...
No shopping place for anything. Malls or Walmarts don’t exist.
Havana is 98% ghetto
Amazing street fruit vendors. Best mango I have ever had .
Too many Old cars / most emitt black smoke and break down on the street
(Normal to see street mechs working on cars on the middle of street)
Again ...Trash everywhere thank god for the rain
Drinking Water shortage
Every home has water collection tank - if you are in a lux hotel swimming in a poool and taking 10 min bath- you have no consciousness.
5 star hotels next to 0 star homes. Hotels don't allow Cubans inside. You need reservation to get coffee and some don't even allow reservation.
Castro is rolling in his grave.
Every Home has metal bar on window and front door (security issue or just habit?). Saw metal bars even on third and fourth floor windows. Odd.
Cloth hanging on every window. 100% solar dryer. 100% biological washing maschine.
touris are seen as cash cow to be milked. If you are seeking a service (includes chatting with someone -be ready to pay)
Don't get in cab without discussing price or else you will pay 40$ for 3 miles. I payed because it was a prime situation for a robbery and I had no choice. Better to payup than give up the passport ,the iphone and the money.
So close to key west but so far away.

Most attractions, restaurants, and museums are located here. The main area is renovated and is fascinating you with its colonial architecture.
You can also find a lot of colorful Cuban artists, souvenir shops, Peso fx changers and street sellers. Sometimes they come all together and this is a little bit annoying. I have to admit that they don't insist if you say clear "no" (ı read in forums that they even abuse but this never happened - same feedback from other groups & friends).
People are helpful and very friendly.
Restaurants and bars at this place are generally small and therefore mostly full (depends on time of visit). The range

I'd been to Cuba many times but hadn't made it into Havana. There is so much to see so much culture and history. I'd totally recommend the time to visit. I'd consider getting a room in one of the many boutique hotels and spend a few days exploring.

We have spent 4 days in this part of Havana visitting quite a lot there so now time for conclusion. Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982, is definetely the historic center of the city of Havana. Sometimes you can feel it is neglected but we have visited also other parts of the city and they look much worse. You can feel it was so beautiful in the past. Sad that some of beautiful buildings are just becoming in ruins in front of our eyes.

Be aware when a lady aproaches you telling you that she knows you from the hotel😄 She only tries to gain your trust. To scam you with fake cigars. DO NOT change your euro at official places. Instead just pay with euro and they will give you change in peso at a rate of 100 to 130 peso for one euro. Tip at least 10%. People there are really struggling. Before getting in a taxi tell him how much you are willing to pay. Taxi or private car from Miramar to old Havana is 10 to 20 euro. From Miramar to the beach is 20 euro. At busy locations it is better to take a walk and get a taxi or private car at a less busy place to get the best rate.

la habanna
It is a city of extremes. On the one hand luxury in a 5 star hotel, 200 meters further you end up in a slum. Lots of street animals to watch out for. Lots of trash in the street. The municipality doesn't seem to be interested, the only thing you can do is the district of the capital.
Always make an agreement of price if you do not trust.
You can see that after the appearance of covid 19 pandemic, Havana has also changed. You will be approached every 20 meters in the center. It's gotten so irritating. People just walk with you.
There is much to improve. Need a lot of zebra crossing, cars almost run over you if you're not careful. It also seems that you can withdraw money at fewer points. Everything has become a black market after the introduction of the national pesos. If you rent the casa, check whether you have water in the bathroom. People have to check you in.
In habanna my cellphone was stolen while I was forgotten in a park. Someone found and ran away. That happened on the first day. Then I told police station, but they don't give me an explanation for the insurance. It is better to explore the country with a rental car, and far from the capital.

We paid for a private tour in an old American Chevy. It was very interesting and made more so as our tour guide Ricardo Luis is an architect so knew a lot about the historical buildings and history of Havana. We also had a lovely meal in The Cannon Shot a fabulous restaurant near the old fort.

Old Havana was easy to navigate and enjoy on foot. Many different food options, with tiny restaurants in hidden corners near the plaza. People are friendly, buildings are old but beautiful to a non-Cuba soaking up the history. Love all the colours.

I like a hostel there but a review mentioned it is noisy at night when sleeping

Our room was right on the front with all the cars, yet didn't hear a thing at night or morning. Good double glazing on windows. Maybe a bit noisy when on the roof, but only of the life going on below and not annoying.

Hi! We would like to rent a classic car to drive by ourselves. Is it possible? and if so, we would love to know the place and company where we will pick up. Thank you!

Do I need a visa ahead of my flight? I saw a note saying I needed one to board the flight to Havana. However, I am leaving from Mexico, not the US.

You need a visa every time you enter cuba as they take it off you as you enter. Hence if you are on a cruise ship and you enter Cuba from airline to get onto the cruise ship you will need another one once you leave the cruise ship and go back to the airport. The cruise ship will issue you the second visa but you do have to pay again. I got my first one before getting the plane from the Embassy in the UK.
