Drive up to Shirley Heights first - this little jewel in the history of the island, overlooked the amazing dockyard which is stepped in history. Can't remember the exact cost to go in, but it is so well worth visiting with an interesting video offering...More

We completely stumbled onto this one and ended up staying a couple hours. Quick 10 minute tour is well worth it and quite educational. Really beautiful location and some solid places for a drink and lunch or dinner.

as an avid sailor, i really enjoyed checking out this British Naval hub from centuries ago! Like a lot of historical sites, it is a smaller area in real life than I had pictured in my mind :)

Worth a visit if you are interested in the local history, you can get a ferry across to The Boom bar which is pretty cool. More adult than child orientated, takes a couple of hours to go round.

Every bus #17 that goes there returns to St John's (unless, possibly, it is the end of the day.) We opted to take the taxi to Shirley Heights but there are frequent buses. They leave St John's when they are full or nearly so... More
