Where's all them Roman stones?
May 2021
Lovely staff, great setting and views but not much loverly Roman stuff to see. Pompeii it isn't. Or Housesteads.

It's really a few bumps in the ground with a nice little museum, coffee shop and (great for us oldies) loos.

Weather not great but still good to visit
Oct 2020
Had to book in advance for a time to visit due to co-vid. Fascinating place to wander around. Guides were well informed.

No Room At The Inn
Oct 2020 • Family
Disappointingly we could not gain access as we had not booked a visit slot. The cafe was good and the shop was worth a visit. Helpfully they let us use the toilets.

Sad we could not visit the site or the museum but that is Covid for you.

Good starting point to explore Hadrian’s wall.
Oct 2020
Good starting spot if approaching the wall from the west as this is where the stone built section started. Nice small museum aimed at children. Good remains with beautiful views. A nice spot for a stroll. Good section of the wall to view/explore. Felt COVID secure.

Great trip with lovely staff
Oct 2020 • Couples
We came across Birdoswald on our walk of Hadrian’s Wall. We were greeted by Ruth at the entrance who was so friendly and insightful about the routes we could take along the wall. Her knowledge of the wall and the fort was so interesting that we just had to delve further in. A trip to the gift shop and cafe before our walk saw us buying a wooden sword each (in case we discovered any barbarians along the way) and an EPIC hot chocolate. The walk along the wall was (just as Ruth said) about a mile each way, and was really enjoyable. Thanks to such a friendly member of staff, we discovered an area we otherwise would have missed (we were walking the wrong way when Ruth collared us at the entrance!). So thank you very much to Ruth and English Heritage for the maintenance of such an important historical landmark.

Worth a visit
Oct 2020 • Couples
There are some really amazing views from this site, it’s a nice place to come and learn about the Romans. The member of staff was extremely helpful and kind and her service was a highlight of our visit. We hadn’t booked and she helped us through that process offering options. We enjoyed exploring. I’d recommend if able to make the trip down to the bridge and the remains of the old bridge, it’s a very steep hill though so care is needed.

One Way System
Oct 2020 • Couples
Covid 19 has meant the a one way system has been put in place here, I’m not sure why when you consider the outdoor nature of the fort and I have to confess that whilst we stuck to it inside the exhibition space, we gave it up outside.
There weren’t a great many people there when we visited this somewhat unexcavated site. There are plenty of information boards dotted around the site and some glorious views at the far end.
Much of the site is geared up to the younger end of the population rather than the more senior members of the population.
There is car parking down the hill from the fort but it’s a steep hill back up. However this does afford a super view along a stretch of Hadrians Wall as it winds of into the distance.
The site is grass and was somewhat soggy when we visited, so bear in mind what shoes you are wearing if the weather is mixed.

Largely unexcavated site
Sep 2020
Birdoswald is largely unexcavated compared to other sites on the wall, therefore more is left to the imagination. There is a small museum before going into the site which gives a good overview of the background history to the wall / Roman occupation - just enough information to take it all in properly. The interactive exhibits have been removed due to Covid - but no loss for adults visiting. There are some lovely views from the edge of the site over the river valley.

Worth it if EH member
Sep 2020
Not one of the Wall highlights but well worth including in a tour especially if you are an English Heritage member, with free parking and admission. It is a large site, but not very much has been uncovered. There is a useful museum, and helpful signage. It is also a good place to access a Wall walk.

Good for the Wall but less so as a site
Sep 2020
The site sems to be focussed on education of those of school age rather than for adults. Incidentally, it is nowhere near fully excavated. Having seen the Time Team programme from this site [I believe from 11 years ago], we were expecting more than what we got. Having said that, if we were children and if the interactive displays [non-functioning presumably due to Covid-19] were functioning, it would have been excellent as an introduction to Roman history in Britain.. Also, if we hadn't had our expectations raised by visiting the very interesting and extensive Roman sites at Wroxeter, Chedworth or even Dorchester in the past, we would have probably considered our visit very informative.
To get around the site you need to walk over the grass, so you may wish to bear this in mind when choosing footwear. I expect in normal years this would have been kept short by the footfall of tourists and schooltrips but with Covid-19 we are not in normal times.
A plus is the nearby well preserved and interesting parts of Hadrian's Wall, with the milecastles and the ruins of the Roman bridge over the river, within easy walking distance of the carpark. Incidentally, the car park charge is additional to the admission fee though obviously free for English Heritage members.
I think many people would get much out of visiting this stretch of the Wall itself without paying to go into Birdoswald itself. The visitor centre can be entered free of charge to visit the cafe, shop and toilets and possibly even the museum. The museum was quite small, with limited artefacts on display. and orientated towards children.
